4k@60Hz works in Windows, not in Linux *** Workaround found ***

I have a problem running a 770GTX 4GB on 1440p@144 that still isn’t solved… I can only used it @120 don’t know why… thread is somewhere in this forum too.

Fantastic Andy - typing this at 4k@60Hz right now via the LG EDID. I had tried the currentmetamode assignments once before during my testing when I found the additional modes being detected - for me the _0 modes do absolutely nothing (no flickers, no trying, no errors) and the other two modes go to a invalid mode for the TV.

The LG EDID seems to work fine - only downside is losing the 120Hz 1080P mode but that doesn’t bother me a bit.

Thanks for testing that. I understand the driver bug that causes the _0 modes (the YUV420 modes) to not do anything, but I’m surprised the other two (the RGB444/YUV422/YUV422 modes) cause an invalid mode for the TV. I’ll try to hunt down a similar monitor to debug this.

FYI, NVIDIA bug 1804330 is tracking this issue.

I think this is a screw up on Vizio’s part, because that particular TV doesn’t actually support anything other than YUV420 at 4K 60Hz. Not sure why the other modes are there at all. I guess the Windows drivers are more robust and cover the weird corner cases like these.

If it would make it easier for you guys to have the TV to work/test with and you are located in the SF Bay Area, I can drop it off at one of your offices. I’m in no rush to get it back any time soon and would be glad to help out!

OK I am stuck here. I have a VIZIO e48u. I have an older K610m video card that supports upto 3840. It’s a 4K tv and works great on windows. On Ubuntu 16.04 I have tried the above steps and switched out the edid.bin with the LG ones. I still do not get an option to chose a 4k resolution 4096 or 3840. I have tried to add the mode using xrandr and keep getting errors.

I don’t ever get the possibility of even trying a 4K resolution because it is never an option for me to chose. Any help here would be great.

I think we have fixed this issue and fix will be available in next r370 driver .

Ownaginatious: Thanks for the offer. I’ve tested and confirmed that RGB444 4k @ 60Hz works on other TVs, so I’m content to blame the Vizio TV for the RGB444 problem. As sandipt said, the YUV420 problem should be fixed in our upcoming 370.xx release.

jdtommy: you shouldn’t need to add new modes. Are there any 4k @ 60Hz modes listed in xrandr -q? You should be able to do xrandr --output DP-0 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 60 (or … --rate 59.94 or similar).

If you’re not getting any 4k@60Hz modes listed in xrandr -q, please set the ModeDebug X config option, restart X, and attach the resulting X log.

Hopefully I was able to post enough of the log file to get the gist. When it started to complain about the PixelClock being to high for the display device, I thought that odd since the mode was coming from the EDID:

So I checked the Nvidia sight to make sure it could handle that resolution http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-K610M.98902.0.html:
The improved feature set now includes support for up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available.

Not sure where the real road block is, if it is really the GPU or I have something else going on. Thanks for the help.

Anyone have any thoughts on the real limitation of my situation. I know the card can do a 4k resolution cause I have seen it do it on windows @ 30Hz. Does the driver have a problem reading its capabilities?

Just updated to the newly released 370.28 drivers and sure enough it fixed the issues with my 4k samsung.

jdtommy: I think you are experiencing a different problem than what is being described (and since been fixed in 370.28) here.

The problems we all had was working with 4k@60hz. You mentioned yours being 4k@30hz which has always worked for us. I could do 30hz I just couldn’t get 60hz.

My suggestion to get a better response is to start a new thread with a title that pertains to your issue. The logs you posted show a very different issue than the one described in this thread.

I can give you some stuff I tried to narrow down what was going on:

  1. Try to install older drivers (I used 361.28, which worked and let me identify what driver started the problem).
  2. Try letting Xorg start X without a config file using custom Options/EDID, and see if that gives you a different log with information that might help you diagnose the issue.
  3. Try a different monitor. That was the big problem for us here is that there are a few brands of TV/monitor that were not reporting the 4k modes properly. If you can try a different one and see if you can get 4k@30 that way.

From the looks of your log, your GPU does not support the mode you are trying to set. Since you know it works with Windows, that means it could be a driver issue or it could be some settings you have for X11. Could be an issue with your modeline telling your system to support something that you can’t. That’s why I would try without the config file, as the new Xorg guesses really well at your hardware set ups.

Good luck with your issue and again I would start a fresh thread that has to do with what you are trying to fix rather than using this thread that has a fix in the newest driver. I’m guessing most people in this thread have stopped watching it as it was fixed, so getting attention here might be hard. I’m unsubbing as well after this post.

I can confirm updating to the 370.28 driver now allows me to do 4K@60Hz, where I was previously only able to get 4k@30Hz.

There are several threads about the M43-C1 firmware update breaking things, so I included my TV FW version…

I had given up on this a while back, and just came back to it after doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04; I’m running a Vizio M43-c1.

It took a bit to get the driver running at all for some reason, and it turns out that NVidia drivers don’t play nice with luks (full disk encryption), so I had to switch boot up to text mode. It’s unfortunate, but not a deal-breaker.

I settled on the 370 version from a ppa, and am now able to select 4k 60hz in the nvidia app and it works perfectly!
Best monitor I’ve ever had. I don’t know about gaming, but it’s great for dev.

Ubuntu 16.04, GTX1070 with 375.26 drivers and Acer Predator XB281HK

With DP, I can select 4k60/30/24Hz, 1024x768 or 800x600 in most games (for example, Nvidia control panel says 1920x1080 is “scaled”. Some native games give me more resolutions for some reason?

With HDMI, I can select 4k30/24Hz, and a boatload of other resolutions, which do not say “scaled”, including 1920x1080.

My GPU should be able to send 4k60 through HDMI2.0 cable, and my display should be able to receive it. Also my display should be able to display 1920x1080 with DP.

I cannot get any response with get-edid > edid.bin from display connected to DP. I can however save edid in nvidia control panel and parse-edid gives a cryptic error message:

I have 2 monitors connected, but the problem is the same even with only one monitor.

This is most annoying with Wine games, and I haven’t found any solutions for it.

This problem still exists with NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39 + kernel_4.10.patch

SO, in the windows I can use 3840x2160@60p with 4:4:4, but in linux I can reach only 3840x2160@30p RGB and if I enable “UHD Color”, result is black screen and TV says that “Mode not supported, 720x480 60i”

First boot:

Screen goes black and TV is reporting not supported mode. If I press Ctrl-Alt-F1, screen stays black.

Second boot:
UHD colors disabled from computer start and Xorg starts to 3840x2160@30p mode. Then I change (at TV) UHD colors enabled and video card change it’s mode. Result is black screen and TV is reporting not supported mode. I press Ctrl-Alt-F1, screen STAYS black, but TV reports that mode is now 1920x1080@60p

That console blackness is strange. If I boot my computer, grub starts with 1920x1080 resolution what I have defined in grub.conf, but then system loads nvidia modules and result is black screen on that 1920x1080@60i… Result is same even I use nouveau driver. If I don’t enable UHD colors, I have no problem to use 3840x2160@30p mode in console.

FFS it’s been like two years since I’ve been running 4k at only 30hz… Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheap 4k60hz compatible graphics (just for display purposes - no gaming) (that works in Linux…).

I’m still running into this issue. My display only supports 2160p60 in combination with 4:2:0 subsampling. But nvidia-settings doesn’t offer that setting in the respective dropdown.

The thing is, even on Windows I first have to switch to a setting that works at 2160p RGB (like at 30Hz) or the driver won’t offer the 4:2:0 mode. So I have to switch in 2 steps. That trick doesn’t work on my Ubuntu 18.0.4 with the 440.48.02 driver.

So, may that be a problem with the display’s EDID data? Here’s the EDID dump from nvidia-settings run through edid-decode:

Especially the part that says “Supported color formats: RGB 4:4:4, YCrCb 4:4:4” has me worried. 4:2:0 is only mentioned later as part of an extended tag, but it’s definitely supported (works on Windows at 4k). The 2 quoted modes are exactly the ones that are offered in nvidia-settings. To me it looks like the driver doesn’t try as hard under Linux as it does under Windows.

Since this limitation (2160p60 at only possible at 4:2:0 subsampling) is a widely known HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limit, it’s unfortunate that this doesn’t work.

So, for a solution: how can I change the EDID so it includes the 4:2:0 mode? Do you know any Linux tools that can do that? I’ve tried wxEDID but it chokes on the dump (crashes).
