Audio problem cracking/poping when I2C transaction timeout

I am using the audio I2S bus on the 40-pin connector, configured as a TDM 16x.
All 16 channels seem to be working well.

But I noticed that the audio crack/pop when I initiated an I2C transaction that is not acknowledged because the slave is not ready.
The easiest way to reproduce this problem is to type: “i2cdetect -y -r 0”.
These are caused by XRUNs, audio frames that are finished to be processed before the realtime dead line.

I also noticed some cracks/pops when plugging/unplugging the HDMI cable.

To enable audio I type:
“mw 0x6000a204 0” at the U-Boot prompt
And configure ALSA with:

Thanks for the link, I tried the suggestions but no change.
I am using the JACK Low latency Audio Framework with ALSA backend and I am playing audio signals directly from memory so no filesystem involved.
I am using the MAXN power mode, maximum clock speed, performance governor and all my processes have realtime priority.

I tested audio frame size of 64, 128 and 256 at 44.1khz and 48KHz.
The problem sound worse with smaller audio frame size but is still very noticeable with 256 frame size.
My application requires an analog loopback latency of ~10ms maximum.
The latencies I am measuring are very good, going out off the JACK framework to the TDM16x converted with an FPGA to eight I2S busses, going to a stereo DAC, looped back analog to a stereo ADC, to I2S, to TDM16x and back in the JACK framework, I measure at 44.1KHz:

  • 3.78ms with buffer size of 64
  • 6.64ms with buffer size of 128
  • 12.48ms with buffer size of 256
    The maximum frame size I can use is 256 to meet my requirements.

The Jetson Nano board is working very well, seems very stable playing audio reliably with low latencies.
Seems like there is only problems with:

  • I2C transactions that timeout
  • Plugging/Unplugging the HDMI connector

I assume that on Nano you are outputing 16x16-bit channels @ 44.1kHz from one I2S interface that is connected to an FPGA?

I am using the I2S on the 40-pin connector (pin 12,19,38,40)
It is configure as a TDM 16x (16ch in and out) with 32-bit integer little-endian format for both capture and playback
I usually run at 16KHz, 32KHz, 44.1KHz and 48KHz.

You are correct the 40 pin connector I2S (really a TDM16) goes to an FPGA that convert it to Eight true I2S busses each with 2 channels in and out.

For the XRUNs due to I2C timeout. Indeed I tried with the step mentioned in your earlier comment i.e to use “i2cdetect -y -r 0” command. But unfortunately not able to hit the issue on our side. So it would be great if you can provide the full kernel log dump to analyze the root cause.

Where is the i2c timeout in the log you provided?
the no ack must be because there is no device connected.
Also, before running the test, increase the log level using the command:
dmesg -n 7

Sorry the XRUNs are happening when I have I2C not acknowledged transactions, I should not have called it timeout.
You are correct, one cause of transactions not acknowledged is when the device is not present and this is the easiest way to reproduce the problem by using i2cdetect.
Another cause of not acknowledged transaction is when the device is not ready, with happens with slow devices or when the device is busy doing something else, and this is the case in my application.

Once you have created a post, there is a paper-clip icon in the top right corner you can use to attach a file. Its a bit weird that you cannot add an attachment until you have created the post, but that is how it currently works.
