Black screen + high fan speed when booting Ubuntu live USB with RTX 5060 Ti on B550 (no iGPU)

I am getting a black screen with high fan speed when trying to boot Ubuntu from USB with my RTX 5060 Ti.

System:

  • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB SHADOW 2X OC PLUS GDDR7

  • Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS WIFI II (latest BIOS)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X (no integrated graphics)

Issue:

  • GRUB menu appears normally.

  • After selecting “Try or Install Ubuntu”, the screen goes completely black.

  • Both CPU and GPU fans spin up to maximum speed immediately.

  • No display output.

What I have tried:

  • Boot parameters: nomodeset, pci=realloc=off, nouveau.modeset=0, pci=nocrs, acpi=off and combinations

  • BIOS: Secure Boot Disabled, CSM Disabled

  • Ubuntu 24.04 and 25.10 (amd64)

  • Different HDMI and DisplayPort cables

The GPU works perfectly in Windows 11.

My question:
Is there any working boot parameter or workaround to make the Ubuntu live session boot with the RTX 5060 Ti on a B550 board without using a temporary GPU?

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey,
You can try if POP-OS installer is able to start: it has NV proprietary drivers included (unlike Ubuntu that by default uses the open-source Nouveau).

Thanks for the suggestion.

Quick question: Since I have a Ryzen 7 5700X (no iGPU) and I’m getting black screen + high fan speed even on Ubuntu, do you think the Pop!_OS NVIDIA ISO will boot successfully with my RTX 5060 Ti on B550 motherboard?

Or should I still expect the same issue?

Thanks!

Last time I tried POP_OS was like back in 2025, so things may have changed since then, but generally I would bet that NV drivers have much better chances of properly handling Blackwell (50xx) than Nouveau. This is because it takes considerable amount of time to reliably rev-eng stuff by the open-source hackers and Blackwell is still a fairly new arch.

Thank you so much for the suggestion and detailed explanation! Really appreciate it.

I’ll try the latest Pop!_OS NVIDIA ISO now and see how it goes.

Thanks again!

Hey,

Thank you so much for the suggestion and explanation! Really appreciate it.

I tried the latest Pop!_OS NVIDIA ISO, but I’m getting this error on the live session:

[FAILED] Failed to start cosmic-greeter.service - COSMIC Greeter.

Screen is black after that and stuck.

Any idea how to fix this or bypass the cosmic greeter?

Thanks again!
