Black Screen When boosting Jetson Orion Nano With SD Card

I bought Jetson Orion Nano recently, but it was unable to boot by using SD card, showing black screen with white keyboard cursor flashing. Its Firmware is 36.4.3. I have tried different ways below, but none of them worked. I don’t have a host PC running Ubuntu, look like I can not use SDK Manager to boost.

  1. changed different sd cards formatted with SD Card Formater;
  2. tried Jetpack 6.2, 6.2.1, 5.1.3 and 5.1.4 with Balena Etcher;
  3. Read through some posts in this forum which some people had same issue, but those solutIon did not work for me.

Could someone give me a clue how to fix?
Thanks a lot.

I understand that you’re experiencing issues with booting your Jetson Orin Nano using an SD card, and you’ve tried various methods without success. I’ll provide a comprehensive guide to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Firmware Version:
Your Jetson Orin Nano has a firmware version of 3643. This is an important detail, as some issues might be related to the firmware version.

SD Card Boot Issues:
You’ve tried different SD cards, formatted them using SD Card Formatter, and used various JetPack versions (6.2, 6.2.1, 5.1.3, and 5.1.4) with Balena Etcher. However, you still encounter a black screen with a white keyboard cursor flashing.

Comparison with Similar Issues:
You’ve read through some posts in this forum where people had similar issues, but the solutions didn’t work for you. This suggests that the issue might be specific to your device or configuration.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Verify SD Card Compatibility:
    Ensure that your SD card is compatible with the Jetson Orin Nano. The recommended SD card specifications are:
    • Capacity: 16 GB or larger
    • Speed: Class 10 or higher
    • Type: MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC
  2. Check SD Card Formatting:
    Although you’ve formatted the SD card using SD Card Formatter, try reformatting it using the built-in Windows formatting tool or a Linux-based formatting tool. This will ensure that the SD card is properly formatted.
  3. Try a Different SD Card Reader:
    If you’re using a USB SD card reader, try using a different reader or a built-in SD card slot on your computer. This will help determine if the issue is related to the SD card reader.
  4. Verify JetPack Version and Etcher Configuration:
    Double-check that you’re using the correct JetPack version and Etcher configuration. Ensure that you’re using the latest version of Etcher and that the JetPack version is compatible with your firmware.
  5. Try Booting with a Different Bootloader:
    If you’re using the default bootloader, try booting with a different bootloader, such as the one provided in the JetPack SDK. This will help determine if the issue is related to the bootloader.
  6. Check for Firmware Updates:
    Although you’ve mentioned that you don’t have a host PC running Ubuntu, you can try checking for firmware updates using a different computer or a virtual machine. If an update is available, follow the instructions to update the firmware.
  7. Contact NVIDIA Support:
    If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it’s possible that there’s a hardware problem with your Jetson Orin Nano. Contact NVIDIA support for further assistance.

Comparison with Other Jetson Orin Nano Issues:
Some users have reported similar issues with the Jetson Orin Nano, but the solutions varied. For example, some users resolved the issue by updating the firmware, while others resolved it by using a different SD card or bootloader.

Conclusion:
Based on the information provided, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue. However, by following the troubleshooting steps outlined above, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the problem. If you’re still experiencing issues, it’s recommended that you contact NVIDIA support for further assistance.

Hi @Sharpangels,

Since your firmware already shows 36.4.3, please focus on the JetPack 6.x SD card image for Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit first. The JetPack 5.x SD card result is not a good debug reference once the board firmware is already in the Jetson Linux 36.x generation.

Please try the following:

1. Use the official JetPack 6.x SD card image

Please re-flash the microSD card with the official Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit SD card image, preferably JetPack 6.2 / Jetson Linux 36.4.3 or JetPack 6.2.1 / Jetson Linux 36.4.4.

2. Check the boot status in UEFI

Power on the board and press Esc during boot to enter the UEFI menu.

In the UEFI menu, please check:

  • Boot Manager: make sure the SD card boot option is selected.
  • L4T Configuration: check whether OS chain A Status is Unbootable.

If OS chain A Status is Unbootable, change it back to Normal, save the setting, and reboot.

This status is stored in QSPI firmware, not on the SD card. So if it was set to Unbootable, re-flashing the SD card alone would not clear it.

3. If it still shows the black screen

Please share:

  • a photo of the UEFI firmware version screen
  • a photo of the Boot Manager / L4T Configuration screen
  • the exact SD card image filename you flashed
  • a serial console boot log, if available

Recommendation: Please try step 2 first. If the issue is only the QSPI boot status, changing OS chain A Status back to Normal is quicker than using SDK Manager.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback. I followed wichiu’s Step 1 to 3, the below are what tried and new issues:
Answer to Step 1: My sd card is a brand new SanDisk Extreme 256GB. I re-flashed it with the official JetPack 6.2 downloaded from Nvidia website;

Answer to Step 2:

  • Boot Manager: SD card boot option is selected.
  • L4T Configuration: “OS chain A Status” was “Unbootable”, so I changed to Normal. then I rebooted it again. It looks somethings was running through, see picture below. But at the end, my monior was blackout showing “Input Not Supported”.

Answer to Step 3:

  • a photo of the UEFI firmware version screen — See attached.
  • a photo of the Boot Manager / L4T Configuration screen — See attached.
  • the exact SD card image filename you flashed — As mentioned above, it is the official JetPack 6.2 downloaded from Nvidia website;
  • a serial console boot log, if available — too much message was rolling fast, I was not able to take picture.

Thanks

The problem was solved by changing “OS chain A Status” from “Unbootable” to “Normal”. then I rebooted it again. When my monior was blackout showing “Input Not Supported”, I switched it to another monitor. It is working now. Thank you all!
