Black screen with GeForce210 (GT218) using 340.76 drivers on Ubuntu 14.04.2

Ubuntu cannot start the desktop, just ends up showing a flashing underscore(cursor) top left.
Otherwise black screen.

Running Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
3.13.0-48-generic x86_64

From what I gather GeForce210 GT218 should be supported in the legacy driver 340.76
So I updated to 340.76 one via ppa:xorg-edgers

Got Xorg log error
“(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.”

Forum searches indicated that allowing empty initial config might work
nvidia-xconfig --allow-empty-initial-configuration
but it results in same black screen

See nvidia-bug-report.log here

Same symptoms using driver 311 and 304
Lightdm works for the login screen.

Any ideas on what can be the problem?

Upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10, Xorg edgers nvidia driver 340.76
Same problem
But some progress, as I tried to remove the curious xorg.conf lines
below that nvidia-xconfig generates.
HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0
They seems to be wrong. I use an old 4:3 LCD over DVI.
Them removed, I get the graphic desktop background and some icons (Yay!)
but no Unity menus. I.e. still a non working desktop.
The tty-switch works so I switched over and ran nvidia-bug-report tool.

nvidia-bug-report when removed HorizSync,VertRefresh

nvidia-bug-report.log with the HorizSync still in
When I get the black screen with cursor (with the faulty xorg.conf),
it hangs completely, I cannot switch to some other tty with [ctrl]-[alt]-[1…]

Got it to work by switching to a separate tty and running

#blacklisting nouveau and some…
blacklist nouveau

setting correct frequencies in xorg.conf (from monitor manual)
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0

  1. resetting compiz settings (possibly tweaked so it did not manage an upgrade)
    export DISPLAY=:0
    sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
    setsid unity
