Blank desktop following latest software upgrad

I can connect by Sync, but the desktop is grayed out with only the mouse cursor showing. Is there a CLI fix? I rebooted and CPU utilizaition is low. I did this through the dash, checking from the ssh shell, I see

olly@sparky:~$ sudo apt update

And it’s hit16 that seems suspect.

Did you use the dashboard to do software upgrade?
Did the SW upgrade finish successfully?
If somehow not finished, you can continue the upgrade with these commands
ā€œsudo apt updateā€
ā€œsudo apt dist-upgradeā€

I did use the dash (having learned my lesson the hard way). As far as I could tell it finished successfully. I’ve run the apt commands and after a reboot through the ssh shell, I’m back to the grayed out screen.

I went ahead an used the recovery usb stick.
