Blank screen after boot NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 on Ubuntu 20.10

I recently bought a HP OMEN 15-ek1950nd, this has a GeForce RTX 3070 and an intel core i7. I upgraded my kernel to 5.10.32. I tried installing the 460 and 465 drivers but they both do not work.

Here’s a bug log and a kernel log.nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (718.4 KB)

kernel.txt (182.9 KB)

Also very weird, I cannot get a screen using nomodeset and I cannot enter the TTY mode. I have SSH enabled though and can SSH into the system.

The display is properly detected but the nvidia driver is obviously incapable of driving it. nomodeset doesn’t help because it’s no optimus notebook.
Does this notebook happen to have a 300Hz display?

Alienware with 300Hz display:

It has a 165Hz display.

Can you check if it works by either

  • using the runfile installer instead of the repo driver (uninstall first)
  • installing 21.04

Installing 21.04 worked perfectly. I can now use my laptop screen and external screen at full resolution and full refresh rate. I installed the third party apps immediately at the 21.04 installation, this failed on the 20.10 installation (but was an Ubuntu error not related to nvidia).
