Bug report on nvidia driver 515.65.01 for fedora 36 (kernel 5.18.19, RTX 2060 Rev. 1)

Because I’m unable to use (log into) the system my nvidia-bug-report.log.gz is from another boot with nouveau driver (instead of nvidia driver) enabled.

Newer f36 kernels (like 5.19.4 or 5.14.6) are also affected.

Please set kernel parameter
nvidia-drm.modeset=1

Details (with using nvidia-drm.modeset=1):

  • TTY/VT (non-graphical login): Not usable (blank screen)
  • Gnome/Wayland: Working
  • Gnome/X11: Working
  • Plasma/Wayland: Not working (blank screen)
  • Plasma/X11: Working

Have a similar issue with Ubuntu 20.04.5 (which uses kernel 5.15).
Will this solution work ?
Will I have to blacklist the nouveau drivers as well ?

No, this issue only applies to F36, not Ubuntu. Please open a new thread, run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file to your post.

Update

Nvidia drivers have stopped working for me on f36 around Sept, 07, 2022 again. This is also true for the (older) kernels like 5.17.5-300.fc36.x86_64 that I know to have been working some days ago.

Hence I’m back to using the nouveau driver.

Working again

I need nvidia graphics driver and cuda support. Hence I did the following:

  1. Follow CUDA Toolkit 11.7 Update 1 Downloads | NVIDIA Developer
sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/fedora35/x86_64/cuda-fedora35.repo
sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf -y module install nvidia-driver:latest-dkms
sudo dnf -y install cuda

Use f35 repo. There is also a f36 repo that is known not to work.
2. Also install

sudo dnf install kmod-nvidia-latest-dkms
  1. Ensure that nvidia modules are build or build them
dkms status
nvidia/515.65.01, 5.17.5-300.fc36.x86_64, x86_64: installed
# build with
# sudo dkms install nvidia/515.65.01 -k 5.17.5-300.fc36.x86_64
  1. Ensure I’ve got something like this:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-blacklist.conf 
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
  1. Build right initramfs with
sudo dracut -v -f --regenerate-all --omit-drivers="nouveau i915" --force-drivers="nvidia_drm nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia"
  1. Ensure that you habe kernel parameters including this:
nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau i915.modeset=0 nvidia-drm.modeset=1
  1. If you changed kernel parameters (see below) update grub2 afterwards with:
grub2-mkconfig -o "$(readlink -e /etc/grub2-efi.conf)"

My complete kernel parameters are:

After reboot you could do a small check with:

Setting kernel parameters in f36 is a bit tricky. If you are in trouble read the following:

Update:

Currently the rpmfusion repos would like to upgrade the driver to version 515.76. This is not desired in my case as I need cuda. Hence I did the following:

  1. I disabled /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver.repo with a enabled=0 line
  2. I masked packages with a exclude=xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-kmodsrc akmod-nvidia line in /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmfusion-nonfree-updates.repo.
