cannot use I2S1 and I2S3 at our application purpose, but I2S2 works.

In our customized target board, three I2S ports of Xavier module are all in slave mode and send/receive TDM16 data to/from other front-end dsp device.
That is, the dsp as I2S master generates BCLK and LRCK for all I2S ports.

Changing I2S port of Xavier from default master mode to slave was done by asking forum here and being guided.

As a workaround guided (I think it is more perfect) I flashed kernel image including modified dts and then inserted sdk components (CUDA,etc) by using sdk manager.

However, going further, I have faced a new problem.

At I2S1 and I2S3(this is module port name, it actually corresponds to I2S4 internal setting) channel, ALSA snd_pcm_readi doesn’t work and returns “Input/output error”.
At I2S2 channel, snd_pcm_readi/writei seem to work well without error. (have not been fully checked yet)

Because we did the similar work successfully for four I2S ports at TX2 based target board (JetPack3.2.1 L4T 28.2.1) last year and we are validating re-using the same application (of course modified properly to Xavier platform), I expect carefully I did not make any mistake on going over this issue.

Seeing audio related dts file, I found the codes which look related with I2S1, I2S4 as follows.

I can confirm that we do test all I2S interfaces supported by Xavier and so this should work. Can you try the following …

I have another question.

I have observed by oscilloscope the phase relation of signal BCLK vs data of the working I2S2 output channel.

The result shows “bitclock-inversion” setting has no effect. (at dts setting as shown below)
If it had effect, data must change at rising edge of clock, but it doesn’t.

Let me call my two issues, issue#1 and issue#2 in order.

Issue#1: I2S1 and I2S4(I’ll call as internal name instead of module pin name) don’t work.
Issue#2: The working I2S2 channel seems to have no effect of bitclock-inversion setting in dts.

As you can see above, I2S1(ADMAIF1) and I2S4(ADMAIF3) have pcm_read error like my case.
I2S2(ADMAIF2) is all right.

Please be aware that Xavier is slave and other dsp device is master in our case.

So at this time, I tried Xavier master case.(cbs-cfs)
Of course for this experiment I changed dsp to slave mode. that is, the clock/fs pins of dsp is changed to input property.

At this case, I2S1 only has the same problem.
When I observed bck/fs signal by scope, they remain quiet at I2S1 test. The Xavier seems not to provide clk/fs signal at I2S1 test.

Regarding Issue#2:

We have just found it is not due to Xavier.

I scoped clk/fs and data at the dsp side of level shifter (1.8V <=> 3.3V).
Because of propagation delay of this level shifter, I think I got such result.

If you cannot find any error on the register values I provided, let us close this issue#2.

Meantime I have been trying again with new Xavier module and JetPack 4.2.2.

From the scratch, I have checked your asking test (arecord test) at each step.

Before modifying dts file and master mode at DevKit

I2S1 => no input/output error
I2S2 => no error
I2S4 => no error

After modifying dts file and master mode at DevKit

I2S1 => error
I2S2 => no error
I2S4 => no error

After modifying dts file and slave mode at target board

I2S1 => error
I2S2 => no error
I2S4 => no error

From above, there are two kinds of new information.

At dev kit, without modifying dts, there seems no error.
But, as modifying dts, probably removing audio codec incompletely (my assumption) may cause the error.

I cannot find I2S4 error which I experienced at JetPack 4.2.
However I am not sure it is due to which one among JetPack version, different module, or my unknowing dts change items.
I will go over this. Please ignore I2S4 error.

Finally please pay attention to I2S1 error occuring when I use that channel at my use case rather than for codec ic.

Yes if the contents are blank that is not good indeed. That implies that there is a problem with the audio routing.

I guess I have found the reproduction method for such symptom.

When I muted ubuntu system audio, the symptom seems to disappear.

I assume once system audio uses I2S1 codec, this symptom happens.

If so, do you have any idea for correcting this symptom at our source?

Hello!

It is most likely that pulseaudio is using the device and by muting, pulseaudio is not trying to access it. If you also want to use GUI to control/access the soundcards then you need pulseaudio, otherwise you could remove it completely from the system by uninstalling the pulseaudio package.

Otherwise you could set the HDMI/HDA soundcard (tegrahdagalent1) to be the default sink for audio and then it will not access the I2S sound devices.
