Can't save config

I’m running Ubuntu desktop and have issues with setting up dual screen on my RTX 4080.

Firstly, and regularly, on startup Ubuntu prompts me to report a problem with the nvidia settings. Whatever appears not to affect me running X server settings from menu.

Secondly, while I can start the X serv settings app, and I can change settings, I found when I opt to save the settings, the setting wizard hangs - Ubuntu will eventually report it as “not responding”. I usually need to shut it down after 5 mins with xkill. The setting file seemed to “save” in all sorts of intermediate states.

Anyone else have this problem, is there a fix?

At the moment I have something up and running, but I’ve had to switch cables on my two monitors to get my home screen on the correct screen on the 4080. Not optimum since I still have to sort the two laptops (one with 2 hdmi out and one with 1 hdmi out) into the same mess of hdmi 3 to 1 switches and cables. It’s not like its one more try to get the screen positions “right” since every failed “save” seemd to leave the config in a different state.

I note as often as I hit send on the ubuntu problem report wizard, and update/upgrade the linux, the problem does not go away. Is there no arrangement between Nvidia and Ubuntu to exchange bug reports?

The exception wizard popped up on startup this morning, the attached file therefore should hold some clue if the nvidia-bug-report.sh works at all. If this does not come up with an “issue” then I am assuming there is some incompatability of the Nvidia tools with Ubuntu for Nvida to sort out with Ubuntu?
