Can't save x server settings using "NVIDIA X Server Settings", wizard hangs

To start, recently I’ve had faults reported against NVIDIA “control panel” on startup, although that seems not to have affected the machine and I’m happily running the 4080 in my machine with blender and my AI dabblings. I haven’t opted to look into that fault, I do religiously say yes to the reporting wizard to send the stats in.

That aside, I bought the widgetry to attach my second display and fired up “NVIDIA X Server Settings”.

For a time I had both displays with same video stream, so with a video tutorial found then worked out how to get the second display on up and running separately.

I mandaged to get the dual displays up and everything was working, left/right displays as expected, the mouse swapping between both displays at the correct edge.

Happy, I then the “Save to x Configuration File” button. The setting wizard stopped. The OS eventually popped up admittedly the wizard was not responsive.

When I reboot, I get the dual displays but back to front. That’s where the config is at, I can get the display set up correctly, and as long as I don’t crack out of the wizard, or restart fine.

Is this a permissions thing? Should I be running the X server settings in sudo?

If it were a permissions thing, I would expect the system to say no to the save in any event. I have tried saving to the default file that pops up in the save dialog, and also tried saving to a different file.

Anyone one else come across this please?
