Dell Latitude 5411 - Ubuntu 2004 - Driver 470 not loaded

OS: Ubuntu 20.04
Laptop model: Dell latitude 5411

Driver version: 470.57.02

Initial goal :
I wanted to install the nvidia drivers for my users to be able to process using the GPUs

Issue description :
Upon installing a driver on laptops, I always double-check using nvidia-smi command to make sure everything looks fine at a glance, but on latitudes 5411, all the laptops get the same error message: “NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.”

Steps taken so far :

  • Tried to uninstall all the nvidia existing related packages and re-installing, no result
  • Upon further inspection, “lspci” only detects the GPU as “3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP108M [GeForce MX250] (rev a1)” but not as a VGA controller
