DGX Spark regression: After updating to kernel 7.0.0-1019-nvidia, gdm no longer boots correctly [FIXED]

After rebooting from the kernel 7.0.0-1019-nvidia update, gdm fails to start. The terminal cursor is visible in the upper left. There are other posts on the forum about other problems from the 7.0.0 update, but the gdm problem was not fixed using their instructions. I was able to restore the spark booting to gdm through the following procedure:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + F3 to get to the terminal.
  2. Run sudo journalctl -b and in the logs I noted nvidia-persistenced.service failed to start, and further into the log the underlying reason reported is that libnvidia-cfg.so.1 could not be found.
  3. The fix required running sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall which updated the nvidia driver to 595.91.07. After rebooting, the newest driver was installed for the kernel 7.0.0-1019-nvidia and gdm correctly started.

An issue with libnvidia-cfg.so.1 typically means an issue with the driver rather than the kernel. Driver 595 is not yet supported on DGX Spark so you may run into unintended behavior. I would recommend downgrading back to 580.178.04 if you do see any performance issues.

When we can expext update for dgx spark?

We need to go higher than 580

.. just fixed mine as well after last update .. had to upgrade to 595.91.07 driver . Seems works just fine . Surprisingly stable and visually sglang now consuming less memory. Will keep it for now =)
