I’m kinda willing to give them a bit more of a benefit of the doubt here:
as @hurikhan77 pointed out some months ago, it’s a big change involving several layers developed by completely separate teams (NV driver, VKD3D-proton, Vulkan APIs/loaders), so it is understandable that it may take several iterations. Now if you factor in the fact, that it’s a desktop feature, not related to compute/AI, and how extremely understaffed the Nvidia Linux desktop team seems to be, it is likely to take even longer.
I think everyone gave them the benefit of the doubt. I get that they are more focused on AI and it makes 100% business sense. However, at this point, they should open the drivers so others can pick up where Nvidia left off especially if they don’t care much about their desktop market anymore. I am not going to hold my breath on the descriptor heap. Testing has proven there is little difference if any other than some better compatibility and don’t think they will pull a rabbit out of their hat either.
They don’t care for now. They are perfectly aware, that once the AI bubble pops, they will need at least to some extent revert to being a graphics/gaming hardware company, so they are extremely unlikely to give up their advantages in this sector.
Agree: neither should anyone: I keep repeating that NV is a terrible choice for a Linux display device. I however bet that once the descriptor heaps are polished, they will bring visible gains. This however may take way longer than anyone would wish, as explained before.
well if you care at all about rt it’s not like you have a choice really.
what I’m curious is is the fact the new vulkan beta from a bit ago specifically mentioned descriptor performance fixes, I’m wondering if those changes were pulled into the new 610 release (probably not?)
but we’re overdue for 620/615 either way so hopefully not too long now to see.
testing takes a bit more than a couple hours, who might “you” be referring to?
Ive been testing each new release and tbh i dont see a reason to continually report “no change” in my games if thats what youre looking for. Performance is still worse, linux still gets fewer fixes and releases…nothing changes overall vs windows the status quo is the same as it has been.
I guess we’re also supposed to ignore all the bugs not fixed still too.
most of the issues you usually list in your post of issues i simply dont have so at least on my end i dont have a good way to test for those
one up side in regards to DX12 i guess on this driver is heap now doesnt black screen on MH Wilds, though its performance is worse
Color me surprised. With what others have reported, I believe we are seeing a trend here.
TBH youre not going to be happy about eGPUs on linux for a while. Thats not just an nvidia issue in this case.
Seems that is dx12 working method with is not compatible with tb4 gen3 X4. No matter if low setting or ultra, dx12 works near 60 FPS. I can,t say that gothic remake on egpu works really better.
Hi! Wanted to share some black myth wukong benchmark on latest drivers. I tried cachy os with and without heap options, the results are exactly the same. With and without Proton wayland also had no effect (beyond making steam overlay not work which is how I confirmed it was actually doing anything at all).
Non-ray traced is pretty close between cachy os and windows, but ray-tracing that takes a huge hit.
This is windows vs no-parameter cachy os without ray tracing, I can’t share more images (nvidia forum policy for new users), but with rt on numbers are 10 average fps for linux and 19 for windows. This is obviously a contrived stress test since it’s 4k maximum ray tracing without dlss or frame gen, which creates an almos unplayable game, but it highlights that linux can get pretty close. (38 vs 43 avg fps)
Black Myth has an additional consideration that Opacity Micro Maps make a massive difference due to the amount of foliage in the game. Right now official OMM support has finally been added to vkd3d and dxvk-nvapi but it requires a Vulkan extension that hasn’t been released in any nvidia driver yet.
There is an older experimental branch of dxvk-nvapi that provides OMM via a different extension and it gives a huge performance increase on Black myth (“closes” the gap to similar levels to Cyberpunk - only 30% slower than windows).

Could you please share some details? I’ve been using different types of eGPUs for compute purposes for some time and the perf is usually on par or a tiny bit better on Linux than on Windows (except of TB5 of course, which currently is virtually completely dysfunctional on Linux unless the link is forced to gen3, which puts to question why spend money on a TB5 adapter in the first place). Maybe in case of gaming is different, so I’d be curious to hear :)
@damianbienias32 as per your posts here and here, you force PCIe gen3 to prevent the TB5 PCIe tunnel from crashing, so you really can’t expect any better perf…
Yes. Cyberpunk uses OMM, but I have never been able to get it to run with the old-style OMM enabled dxvk-nvapi and without working drivers, we can’t test the new style OMM.

So I fired up Cyberpunk 2077 with the “low” graphics preset and it went from 27 fps with Mesa main to 50 fps with linux-dmabuf v6. That’s more than 80% better performance!

So your game gets copied to system memory and back to video memory, for no real reason. The performance hit caused by that isn’t great in general, but it gets so much worse with external GPUs.
When all you have is one USB C cable to transfer data from and to the GPU, with high resolution monitors the bandwidth of that cable can be too small even for copying in one direction!
thats exactly the kinda stuff i was referring, This is actually more relevant i think to laptops most likely though eGPUs are mentioned and tested
@morgwai666 Xaver has mentioned a number of issues that eGPUs face. Kwin and Mutter dont handle the eGPU situations particularly well. Im not going to have the time atm to hunt down all of it but considering they’re a big contributor to kwin and wayland as a whole they have a good idea of the situation.
