Hello,
I am experiencing an issue after updating the NVIDIA driver to 580.88 on AWS instances with NVIDIA L40S and Blackwell GPUs.
Environment
-
GPU: NVIDIA L40S (g6e), Blackwell (g7e.4xlarge)
-
OS: Windows Server 2025
-
Driver version: 580.88
-
Platform: AWS EC2
-
Application: NVIDIA Isaac Sim
Problem Description
Initially, using the following AMI:
- NVIDIA Isaac Sim™ Development Workstation (Windows)
the instance had driver version 582.16 installed by default, and:
-
GPU was in WDDM mode
-
Isaac Sim launched successfully
However, after:
-
Performing a clean driver installation of version 580.88, or
-
Installing 580.88 on a fresh Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Base AMI
the GPU consistently switches to:
Driver Model: TCC
Attempts to switch back to WDDM:
nvidia-smi -g 0 -dm 0
result in:
Not Supported
Additional Findings
-
The same behavior occurs on:
-
g6e.4xlarge (L40S)
-
g7e.4xlarge (Blackwell)
-
-
In all cases:
-
Default (582.16) → WDDM
-
After installing 580.88 → TCC (locked)
-
Impact
-
Isaac Sim fails to launch when GPU is in TCC mode
-
No way to switch back to WDDM
-
Reproducible across multiple instance types and AMIs
Questions
-
Is TCC-only behavior expected in driver 580.88 for L40S and Blackwell GPUs?
-
Has WDDM support been restricted or removed in this driver version?
-
Why does the preinstalled driver (582.16) support WDDM while 580.88 does not?
-
Is there a supported method to enable WDDM mode on these GPUs?
-
Which driver versions are recommended for Isaac Sim on Windows Server 2025?
Summary
-
WDDM works on preinstalled driver (582.16)
-
WDDM becomes unavailable after installing 580.88
-
Issue reproduced across multiple GPU generations and AMIs
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
