Driver cannot communicate with GPU on Legion 7i Pro with RTX4070

Have been trying to get my computer to communicate with the GPU however have not been successful.
Running Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS.

  • nvidia-smi returns
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
-lspci | grep -i nvidia returns:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 2860 (rev a1)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 22bd (rev a1)
  • Reading this page. I understand I need to be running kernel v5.15.0-67. However I cannot find this kernel. Even when I try the closest firmware I get to a point where a reboot results in black screen boot.

attached is the bug report. I would appreciate any help i can get.

Hi there @pghaheri and welcome to the NVIDIA developer forums.

The log is a bit inconclusive, but obviously there is no kernel module loaded for the NVIDIA GPU. The correct kernel headers are installed, so I suspect a mismatch between kernel version and kernel header version.

I recommend checking on the Ubuntu help pages how to upgrade the kernel with 20.04 and make sure you only have one version installed. Removing unused kernel versions is explained there in detail.

Then cleanly remove the NVIDIA driver (purge it) and do a fresh reinstall.

That should help.
