Error attempting to use suse Leap 15 rootfs

Hello,

I’m using a jetson TX2 development kit with JetPack 3.2.1, and would like to install a suse-based rootfs instead of the default ubuntu-base. A search resulted in the following (old) resources:

Following the wiki example, I’ve downloaded a suse leap 15 rootfs, but am not able to successfully extract over the L4T rootfs. Does anyone have insight into why this is failing?

I have no experience in this, but I think the porting guide was for TK1 which has armv7 32 bits cores.
However, TX2 has armv8 64 bits cores, so you would have to look for similar archive for armv8 cores (aarch64/arm64), and adapt the guide for porting to TX2 (initialization script might be different for TX2).

@Honey_Patouceul is correct…anything ARMv7/32-bit won’t work (you have the wrong SuSE architecture).

The following applies only after you get the correct SuSE rootfs:

As for the actual tar errors, I suspect that after you get a 64-bit version you should extract as root such that it preserves permissions (“man tar”…see “-p” or “–preserve-permissions”). Also probably the tar option “–overwrite” might be needed.

Something you will want to keep in mind is that user ID and group ID are determined numerically (from “/etc/group” and “/etc/passwd”), and what displays from “ls -l” from your host may be a number (if your host does not have that number mapped to a name) or a name which differs from what you might expect (if your host has that numeric ID, and a different user name is mapped to it). Preserving permissions implies preserving numeric IDs. Only the root user can operate on numeric IDs which don’t belong to the user doing the operation.

The reason this matters (other than needing to unpack as root/sudo) is that flash has a step which runs “apply_binaries.sh” using sudo. Not all parts of apply_binaries.sh will apply for your situation since this is expecting Ubuntu, and you may in fact have to manually set things up and avoid some parts of apply_binaries.sh. The part you’d have to make sure is done is that the “nv_tegra/nvidia_drivers.tbz2” is unpacked from the base of rootfs using sudo. The drivers would need to be applied after all other rootfs edits are done.

Extracting the suse rootfs shows that I am trying to copy a symlink over a directory. I’m currently trying --recursive-unlink, but that sounds like I’ll lose all L4T files in any common directories.

There won’t be any “easy” way to do what you want. Trial and error is probably the only way to get to where you want to go. Does this work if you first cd to “Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/”?

If you can see what files are in the way post the “ls -ld <whatever_it_is>”…it might be useful to see what it is that can’t be overwritten.

Nope. The errror message is identical.

The tar error reports the problem files are etc/ssl/certs and usr/lib/udev. The base BSP rootfs has:

Ok, the deal is that the files you are overwriting are symbolic links to the location of real files on your host and not in “rootfs/”; it would be bad to overwrite the location the links point to on your host, it would be good to overwrite the symbolic links within the rootfs. You will want to manually remove any conflicting symbolic links in the “rootfs/” directory, e.g.:

…then run the tar command. “Rinse and repeat” until no symbolic link conflicts are visible.

When that is completely done you will want to keep in mind that part of what the apply_binaries.sh script does (manually if command line flashing, automatically if using JetPack…which would overwrite your rootfs in ways you don’t want) is to unpack the “nv_tegra/nvidia_drivers.tbz2” archive into the root of rootfs. Some of the other changes made by apply_binaries.sh may not work as expected since some of the script changes it makes are specific to Ubuntu. This isn’t necessarily bad, so long as the SuSE version still does as expected. If the SuSE version does not do as expected, then you may need to edit the custom rootfs and flash again (and you may need to do this many times before you get it working).

Another way to describe this last paragraph is that running the flash software normally, and not telling it to re-use the image implies you’d overwrite any changes you made when you run the actual flash via JetPack…this is not an issue if flashing on command line since it is up to you to unpack rootfs and not up to JetPack.

There may be parts of the bootloader envirnonment which need changes going beyond just the rootfs, e.g., I don’t know if SuSE has some expectation of the initial environment which the current U-Boot does not provide.

FYI, command line flash has you unpack rootfs, then run apply_binaries.sh (both with sudo). During a normal flash the image is generated: “bootloader/system.img”. Flash generates system.img as a raw file system, moves it to file system.img.raw, and then generates a sparse/compressed version, “system.img”…it is this sparse version which gets flashed. The rootfs directory is almost 100% a direct copy of what goes into the flashed image, but there are some exceptions so far as the “rootfs/boot/” directory is concerned…flash.sh parameters will change what gets edited or overwritten in “rootfs/boot/”, but everything else will be exactly as you change it.

If you edit something in rootfs which is not in “rootfs/boot/”, then likely a normal flash will propagate that content as you expect. There are exceptions to this in terms of boot-related files, e.g., there will probably be some module or firmware edits outside of “rootfs/boot/”. Files in any of the NVIDIA archive which get unpacked into a kernel module directory which differs in version from your SuSE kernel version will not be seen by the different kernel version.

If you need to edit extlinux.conf you’ll have to generate the “bootloader/system.img.raw”, looopback mount this, edit the extlinux.conf in that, and copy it to “bootloader/system.img” (the flash doesn’t care if this is raw or sparse, but raw will take much longer due to size…on the other hand a sparse image can’t be edited since the version used here has no open source tools available to work with it). After edit you’d use the “-r” (“reuse”) option during flash.

Example of a normal command line flash:

sudo ./flash.sh -S 29318MiB jetson-tx2

Example reusing “bootloader/system.img”:

sudo ./flash.sh <b>-r</b> -S 29318MiB jetson-tx2

ugh. This issue was due to having bad content in Linux_for_Tegra. Now that I downloaded the latest drivers, the rootfs applies correctly.

As penance, I’ll post progress later.

Update:

I’ve followed the instructions on the wiki page (http://elinux.org/Jetson/Porting_openSUSE), and now have a booting dev kit. Using the TX2 and openSUSE Leap 15.0 required pretty minimal changes, as follows:

  1. exclude the boot directory when extracting the 15.0 rootfs
  2. install drivers to aarch64-linux-gnu instead of arm-linux-gnueabihf
  3. update the flash command to ./flash.sh -R rootfs jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1

I am currently trying to determine why the monitor isnt working and why I cannot log into the console.

The monitor displays the following error, which seems to indicate the video card is powered up but not configured correctly.

User not known to the underlying authentication module

Permissions issues were resolved by copying the ubuntu and nvidia credentials into group, passwd, and shadow files.

The monitor issue was resolved by moving to Tegra186_Linux_R28.2.1_aarch64.tbz2 drivers.

I’m going to validate the hardware and post my installation steps here.
