I see Movie Capture will export PNGs to encode to a MP4. Is it possible for it to use EXRs instead?
(An internal Feature Request ticket was generated from this post: OM-55853: EXR for MP4)
Thank you!
Hi there!
Would you mind explaining a bit more what you’re after?
When encoding a video, one usually wants the output to be ‘displayable’, so to have the picture in the display color space. This means that the ‘raw’ rendering needs to go through a color space transformation, else it would look wrong. When rendering to pngs, this is being done, so the images are ready to be displayed and can then be encoded into a video.
EXRs on the other hand are designed for full dynamic range data where you can store the ‘raw’ data of your rendering. This is usually what you would export as an image sequence for further compositing and it is not suited to be displayed directly.
This is why I don’t understand the reason to render to exrs to then directly encode into a mp4.
Thanks,
Patrik
Hello, I would like to have a quick preview of the EXR sequence. The color doesn’t need to be in the display space. RT renderer usually generates stuttering results so a quick preview should let me know if I should re-render the shot. Otherwise I will have to open another software to view the result of every shots.
I send the EXRs to my client, not the MP4.
I see. But with the mp4 output, you’d loose the exrs. At least this is how it’s currently working for mp4 output.
If it’s just about previewing your currently running render. Wouldn’t it be more convenient to just use a image sequence viewer? There are some great open source options, like DJV: DJV
This would allow you to check your images, in the right color space, while the render is still running. I find that much more powerful than some kind of compressed (mp4), linear-space preview of your sequence.
Please let me know if I misunderstand you.
What do you mean by that? When I output MP4, Create outputs PNGs and encode them into a MP4.
If this is more reasonable to the development of Create, then I completely understand. I’m okay using Davinci Resolve for the EXRs preview.

Ah yes, you’re correct. I thought that these PNGs are temporary and get removed once the encoding process completes, maybe that was the behavior in the past or I’m just wrong.
I believe now I understand your request better. You would like to select the mp4 output, get the exr files during rendering and you then want it to automatically encode it into a preview video so you can easily check the output before sending out the files.

It’s more about creating an interface that is easy to use. Giving users the option to select the ‘temporary’ format when outputting mp4s and potentially encoding a movie in linear-space is probably quite confusing for less experienced users.
