G-Assist Gemini plugin – requesting deprecated API, new API fails validation

First, I apologize if this is not the right place to be posting this. A live support agent directed me to post on the forums about this problem. I would appreciate if it could be moved to the right place if that is the case.

I’ve been trying out G-Assist and the Gemini plugin requires a Google API, claiming it starts with “AIza” and basing its validation on that fact.

Google no longer lets users generate AIza API keys. The new ones start with AQ. Here’s a link I found talking about the change:

The newly generated API key from Google (starting with AQ, not AIza) fails the validation.

I’ll be glad to know more about what I can do to get the Gemini plugin to work.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome @jk.markham to the NVIDIA developer forums where NVIDIA developer discuss the tools, SDK and products from NVIDIA.

Could it be that whatever live support you talked to wanted to direct you to the Google developer forums?

I am not aware that NVIDIA has anything to do with Google API keys.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am sure I was directed here. I’m guessing that the problem could be solved on NVIDIA’s end by adjusting the validation rule to allow the new, updated API keys from Google.

Oh now I see what you mean.

Correct?
Well, it is in experimental stage, so I am not surprised this happened.

Normally I would refer you to the forums https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/nvidia-app/129/, but I think I take a shortcut and ask internally since this might affect a lot of people.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Thank you. I’ll be grateful if you let me know when I can test the updated API format again.

So i found a solution. You can configure the Gemini plugin by manually placing the API key in Nvidia directory.

Path: C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\nvtopps\rise\plugins\gemini\gemini-api.key

(Note: C:\ProgramData is a hidden Windows folder. You can copy and paste the path directly into your Windows File Explorer address bar to jump straight to it.)

How to Update or Set the Key

  1. Navigate to the gemini folder mentioned above.
  2. Open the gemini-api.key file using a plain text editor like Notepad.
  3. Paste your Google Gemini API key into the document.
  4. Save and close the file. Make sure there are no extra spaces or blank lines before or after the key.

If you haven’t already generated your key, you can obtain a free one by signing into Google AI Studio.

Worked like a charm. Thank you very much!
