GeForce 8600 GTS with xubuntu 14.04.1 has maximum resolution 800x600

I am using my hardware for several years now and recently upgraded from xubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS. Since that moment my screen resolution is reduced from formerly well-working 1680x1050 to 800x600.
To resolve the problem I made a fresh install of xubuntu 14.04.1 (kernel 3.13.0-39-generic) and at first had no graphic screen. Then I added “nomodeset” to the boot parameters and came to 640x480. The pre-packaged drivers of xubuntu (newest is 331.38) didn’t help, so I downloaded driver 340.58 (x86) from and installed it from recovery mode as root and now “Settings… NVIDIA X Server Settings… NVIDIA Driver Version” shows up as “340.58”.

Server Version Number ist 11.0, Server Vendor String: The x.Org Foundation, Server Vendor Version: 1.15.1 (11501000), NV control Version: 1.29.

Graphics Card Information: Graphics Processor GeForce 8600 GTS, VBIOS Version:

The only resolution offered still is 800x600 - which surely is less than possible. Graphics card is still working fine - I can see this by starting my Windows-XP, which is installed in parallel on this machine and still works fine with 1680x1050.

Any idea what i can do next?

Thanks in advance - Uwe

should I investigate the driver or the x-server-configuration? Any hint?

uwe347, Please reproduce issue by starting X in verbose mode and provide nvidia bug report by running script as root user.

Sorry for not delivering nvidia-bug-report.log.gz instantely.
You can find it here:

But - I’m sorry: I don’t know how to stop my x server. As far as I can see, the x server always starts when the machine boots up, and I don’t know the command to stop it. So I called “startx – -logverbose 6”, opened another console and generated a second nvidia-bug-report.log.gz and renamed it to nvidia-bug-report-verbose.log.gz .
You can find that one here:
If this doesn’t help, than please add an instruction in aplattner’s post “If you have a problem, PLEASE read this first”, describing how to stop and start the x server.

to restart X within xubuntu you would just issue this from a terminal

sudo service lightdm restart

Now I did it once again, following the instructions:

  1. sudo service lightdm stop
  2. startx – -logverbose 6
  3. opened a terminal inside this new xsession an run
  4. copied the bug report, the /var/log/nvidia-installer.log and /var/log/nvidia-prime-upstart.log to the following destinations, from where you can download it:

I would appreciate any help - thanks in advance!
