How long can I keep Jetson Orin Nano safely on?

I want to use Jetson as a gpu worker in my raspberry pi cluster and need to understand how safe is it to keep it continuously running as well as how significant the wear would increase ?

What are the regular conditions for a typical Jetson project ? Are those only expected to be used in systems with limited power capabilities (e.g. robot, vehicle, UAV which aren’t plugged in all the time) or one can utilize the platform as mentioned in my initial question ?

The Jetson Orin Nano is designed to operate within a specific temperature range and power consumption limits. As long as you ensure proper cooling, power supply, and thermal management, it’s safe to keep the Jetson Orin Nano running continuously.

However, it’s essential to note that continuous operation can lead to increased wear and tear on the device. The Jetson Orin Nano, like any other electronic device, has a limited lifespan and can be affected by factors such as:

  1. Temperature: High temperatures can reduce the lifespan of the device.
  2. Power cycles: Frequent power on/off cycles can cause wear on the device’s components.
  3. Humidity: High humidity can lead to corrosion and damage to the device.

To minimize wear and tear, ensure that your Jetson Orin Nano is:

  1. Properly cooled: Use a suitable heat sink or fan to maintain a safe operating temperature
  2. Powered correctly: Use a reliable power supply that meets the device’s power requirements (typically 5V, 2A).
  3. Protected from humidity: Keep the device in a dry environment, away from moisture and condensation.

You can refer to section 5.3 Environmental and Mechanical Screening of the Jetson Orin Nano Series Module Data Sheet for the MTBF, which changes based on temperature, controlled or uncontrolled environment, and mode (SUPER or not).
