IMX490 night scene performance: blooming and graininess

Hello,

I have been evaluating IMX490 camera sensor performance in night scenes. We have encountered significant blooming, graininess, and blurring, even in regions well lit by vehicle lights facing away from the camera such the back of the truck in the right side of the attached image.

I understand that low light scenes can be challenging to tune for, but this performance is much worse than less capable hardware (such as IMX424).

Can we improve the quality of image processing in these scenes? Thanks

Hi @a.dobke,

Which IMX490 module listed in DRIVE Ecosystem - Hardware and Software | NVIDIA Developer are you talking about?
Is the issue observable on nvsipl_camera? What’s the command?
Thanks.

The module used here is listed as Sony IMX490EVB-MOH-SMM2, 120 Calin - CAR53 on that page.

Yes the output its identical with nvsipl_camera with a command such as:

nvsipl_camera --filedump-prefix out --link-enable-masks "0x0001 0x0000 0x0000 0x0000" --platform-config "IMX490_RGGB_CPHY_x4"

Thanks for the information.

According to the page, “Note: NVIDIA DRIVE SDK releases do not include the software or tuning for these cameras. The software and support are provided directly by the third party vendor.”. Have you checked this with Sony?

Yes, questions sent to Sony have led us to being pointed back to NVidia.

Perhaps you can clear up that arrangement? Is Sony entirely responsible for the tuning of these cameras and free to release new versions of the tuning? Or is there moderation, QA, etc that NVidia has that is play in the process?

I will also test with some of the other cameras on the list.

Sony should support the camera module. Please help to provide your Sony contact information (via a private message) and we will help to figure out the gap with Sony offline. Thanks.
