Installing CUDA 10.1 update 2 from run file

I am using Ubuntu Desktop 18.04. Installing CUDA 10.1 update 2 from the run file with --silent switch.
After reboot, running nvidia-smi will show the driver version as 418.87.00 and CUDA version 10.1. Under processes, nothing is listed.
Running nvidia-settings returns an error, ‘ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system’

What am I doing wrong?
