Is L4T 32.5 With Jetson Xavier Supported SD Boot?

Hello,

I’m trying to boot the Xavier from the SD card again.
I used L4T Version 32.5 with the below method, but I can not boot well.

I saw Developer Guilde. Which explained that SD boot is applied to Jetson Xavier NX, Jetson Nano series development modules only.

Does it remain that the Xavier is supported SD boot?

Please try to use internal for sdcard case.

What did you put into your sdcard? Looks like file system is corrupted.

The driver and the sample file system are downloaded from the L4T archive.

Plugin the SD card to Jetson Xavier.

Even if the partitions are valid the filesystem could still be corrupt. For example, if some write operation occurred on the partition on the host PC, and the card was pulled before write completed or if the card was pulled while still mounted, then the filesystem content could be corrupt despite gdisk showing valid partitions.

I see it wants “Image.sig”…I’m not sure how that is used or created, but it is related to the actual kernel file. If you’ve in any way modified the kernel, then those steps might be incomplete.

I checked the SD card with the “diff -r --no-dereference” command, and I could not copy the SD card completely.
So I retried to copy the SD card, and I can boot once. But I cannot boot the Xavier when I reboot it.
I think the SD card is broken. I changed to the new SD card and retried.

I do not change the filesystem from the L4T archive.
I think the filesystem is correct because the Xavier can boot from emmc by the filesystem.

Just a general comment on this:

Hardware drivers can often be communicated with as just an ordinary file, e.g., to read or write. However, custom control of the hardware device which is not in common with normal file operations will need a special command, the “ioctl” (“i/o control”) call. The ioctl failure implies you have the wrong driver for that piece of hardware.

An example situation for an ioctl failure would be that perhaps you have an Intel network card, and it supports some sort of advanced management command. Then you replace the Intel network card with another brand, and that brand does not support the advanced management command. The result of the software trying to use that non-existing feature would be the driver complaining “Inappropriate ioctl for device”.

On a Jetson, if your device tree is incorrect, then you might see some sort of ioctl error if for some reason a device still exists, but is pointed at the wrong driver. An example on a Jetson is that the serial UARTs can use either the standard driver (resulting in driver files such as “/dev/ttys0”) or the NVIDIA “Tegra High Speed” DMA-capable driver (resulting in driver files such as “/dev/ttyTHS0”). Both drivers work on the same UART, but only the THS driver supports DMA configuration…a command to ttyTHS0 might work, and yet fail to ttyS0. The list of drivers associated with that device are in the device tree for hardware which is not hot pluggable…an incorrect device tree listing only the standard driver and not the THS driver could cause end software to report “inappropriate ioctl for device”. Is there anything custom about your carrier board or device tree?

Some of your hardware is not detected, or detected incorrectly. This could be either a software issue or failed hardware. When running on SD card fails, but eMMC works, I have to conclude device tree or other configuration is missing.

I think that the same extlinux.conf is written with SD boot or eMMC boot.

The dev kit AGX Xavier’s S/N is 0421019015046.
HDMI monitor and USB keyboard are attached.
To me, the dev kit looks the same as any other.
I’m going to try SD boot with the other Xavier just to be sure.

I tried to boot another Xavier, but I cannot do it.
It shows the same UART log.
I tried to use both SD cards, UHS-1, and UHS-3.
SD card capacity is 64GB.

The above usually has more content than just that. Is the extlinux.conf file edited? If you can boot your Xavier (even if not via SD card), can you post the output of “cat /proc/cmdline”? I am curious as to why it goes from “${cbootargs}” to “quiet” without some of the more common content between the two. Something seems to be missing, although I suppose it might be the nature of booting to SD card on recent releases.

Note: I typically remove the “quiet” just to get more logs.

“/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf” in the SD card is copied from the sample root filesystem.
If “extlinux.conf” must be changed, should I change it manually?
Or, does “flash.sh” change it automatically?

You should remove the “quiet” from the extlinux.conf file. Logging is less useful with that in place.

Your SD card version is missing the “root=” part. This is what tells the kernel where the root filesystem is. For a local eMMC system, then typically this is “root=/dev/mmcblk0p1”. On an external device boot you might see something similar, but perhaps listing a UUID. Looks like the flash process itself may have skipped telling the Jetson to adjust its QSPI memory to point at a UUID…one way or another, the UUID of a partition needs to be marked as the root device (that or I’m just too out of date in my knowledge).

Right now I lack the ability to actually try this myself (lack of SD card), but would someone here be able to show a “cat /proc/cmdline” on a working SD card boot of an Xavier? If we know the correct “rootfs” content in the command line it might be possible to simply add this to the extlinux.conf.
