Jetson Orin NX GUI Not Visible After Reboot – Black Screen

Hi @Trumany @KevinFFF ,

GPU Type : Jetson Orin nx
Nvidia Driver Version : jetpack version 5.1.5
Operating System + Version : Ubuntu -20.4
Python Version (if applicable) : python -3.8

I’m facing an issue with my Jetson Orin NX after installing a new SSD and flashing Jetson Linux.

Issue Description:

  • I inserted a new SSD and flashed Jetson Linux using **SDK
    Manager.
  • The first time after flashing, everything worked fine, and the GUI
    was visible
    .
  • However, after a restart, the GUI went black, and it hasn’t been
    visible since.
  • I tried reflashing the SSD again, but the issue persists – still no
    GUI.
  • Despite the black screen, I can confirm that Jetson is running.

What I Tried So Far :

Checked HDMI Connection – It’s properly connected.
Reflashed Jetson Linux with SDK Manager – No effect.
Booted into UEFI Boot Manager – SSD is detected.
Tried Secure Boot Settings – Secure Boot is disabled, but it still says “TEST KEY DETECTED”.
Checked Recovery Mode – Device enters Recovery Mode successfully.

Current Behavior :

  • After booting, the screen is black, and the monitor enters sleep mode.
  • No NVIDIA logo appears, only a black screen.
  • UEFI detects my SSD, and I can select it from the Boot Manager.

@KevinFFF @Trumany Could you please help me debug this issue?

Is it a dev kit board or your customized carrier board?

Its a customized board from seed studio

This “might” be hardware issue over DP/HDMI lines. Even we faced similar issue ( however here you are telling first time display came !!)

Refer below thread:

Thanks for that!

I had flashed my Jetson a while ago, and it was working perfectly without any issues. However, after inserting a new SSD and attempting to flash it again, this issue started occurring.

first time on what memory did you flash?
second time are you trying to flash on external SSD?

First Time , I flashed with the internal SSD from seedstudio .
Second Time , I used External SSD and I am facing the following problem.

Hi,

Since you are using HDMI port, is your board a custom carrier boar?
Or are you using the DP-HDMI adapter?

Thanks

Hi @DavidDDD we are using standard HDMI port.
Yes, our carrier board is from Seeed Studio.

Our official bsp or sdk manager not support the custom carrier board.
Please reach out the vendor to get the customized bsp.

Thanks

Thanks @DavidDDD ! for your help! we tried flashing it again with our previous SSD the one that was provided along with kit from seeed studio.
now we are able to access the gui!
But we are experiencing this problem when we instert new ssd(WD Blue 250 GB SN570 NVMe M.2 2280)

Hi,

Let me clarify the situation:

  • Use the same method (sdk manager) to flash orin nx with seeed studio carrier board.
    • With ssd provided by seeed studio: PASS
    • With new ssd (WD Blud): Fail

Please correct me if wrong.

Thanks

Hi @DavidDDD
You are right, With new SSD it fails

MIGHT be hardware issue. just few thoughts..

check the specification differences between your SSD and the one provided by the third party.
Does the voltage levels match or they vary?

Do this SSD which is causing the display to fail is trying to draw more current/power?

Does it need some changes in the carrier board like volatge level shifter/capacitor to be added?

Hi,

Please provide the serial console log for us to review.

Thanks
