Jetson Xavier NX complete disappointment

I ran into complete disaster with your Jetson Xavier Nx at 8GB RAM.

First of all it came with basic Ubuntu on it and a broken one too, a proxy error made it impossible to run even sudo apt update.

Ethernet could not be configured. There is no WiFi on it either, you need adaptor. My freaking toaster has got WiFi and your top notch device doesn’t?

I flashed it with Jetpack for my robotics project and it ran out of RAM in no time. I booted from an SSD and it crashed completely because the USB port is slow.

Here is a screenshot of the actual memory use on your awesome device. It cannot run even light Ollama so this is not for AI, it’s just a dev board with ambitions marketed as edge AI development board. It’s overpriced for what it is.

The fan is too loud and sounds like an old vacuum cleaner, because your cooling design is flawd.

It’s unusable for anything in my project. Absolutely anything. Because of the fan noise I cannot use it for cameras. I cannot use it for anything, actually. Please advise what to do with it: sell it, sell parts,

trash it?

Hey @dianavinte,

How is it going?

Sorry to hear your experience with the NVIDIA Jetson NX board was not the greatest.

Just out of curiosity.
May we ask what was your intended purpose for the Jetson board originally ?

We might be able to give you some ideas on what to do with it.

I wanted to run a small LLM on it, but it’s impossible. Also I cannot use it for cameras either because the noise of the fan interferes with the microphone. I returned it to the seller. Sadly this set me back 1 month, but I learnt.

Hi @dianavinte,

Thanks for getting back.

Sorry to hear that, it really sucks to be delayed by unexpected issues.

NVIDIA Jetson’s are great little devices, but they might not be the best solution for all projects. Even at carrier board level you could find certain limitations, such as the fan being too loud just like it happened to you.

In any case, just for future reference, if at some point you want to revisit the idea of using a Jetson board for any of your projects, there are other carrier boards in the market, and some third party manufacturers like Connect Tech offer passive cooling options.

Finally, if you need help catching up with your project’s development, please do not hesitate to reach out. We would love to give you a hand.

best regards,
