Jetson Xavier NX - won’t load GUI, can’t get it out of bash environment

Was doing development on Xavier NX and when I rebooted system it failed to come up with the following error:

The system had been running for several months without issue.
Configuration:
NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX (Developer Kit Version)
L4T 32.6.1 [ JetPack 4.6 ]

I was working on a servo project using a PCA9685 controller over I2c bus. I had been experimenting with read/write over i2c bus and debugging an issue when I was seeing unexpected results so I rebooted system and this problem occurred. Don’t think it is related but wanted to provide the information to paint a full picture. Development environment is remote VS Code, C++ project.

There is a similar issue in this forum: Jetson Xavier NX starts directly to bash - won’t load GUI, can’t get it out of bash environment. In that thread the symptom was root fs was not able to load from SD card and remedy was to use SDK Manager and reflash.

My troubleshooting to this point:
Reflash SD card and install OS using Balana etcher with latest image (jetson-nx-jp46-sd-card-image). This is a process I’ve done many times on Jetson Nano and NX devices.
– Same results
Done the same process with another SD card (BTW the sd cards are 128mb and I’ve used in 10+ devices).
– Same result
Tested both sd card images in another Jetson Xavier NX and it boots and brings me to the configuration wizard.

Loaded up the SDK manager as the previously noted forum thread suggested and ran through the download, forced reset, flash, etc.
– Same result
– Noticed error on SDK Manager log

Wanted to explore what direction to go from here, RMA ? If so, how is that done ?
Are there other options or insight someone can provide ?

The real cause of your issue is due to this comment you said.

I was working on a servo project using a PCA9685 controller over I2c bus.

I guess you accidentally modify the module eeprom content which is also using a i2c bus as interface.

Changing sdcard or sdkm won’t fix this issue. You can directly RMA this module.

Hey Wayne. Thanks for the response. Been working with the RMA team and this unit was purchased 7/1/20 so it is no longer under warranty.
Are there any other options. It’s hard to believe my only remedy is to trash this unit and purchase another. Pretty high cost for a software bug.

Please dump boot log from the serial console first.

My decision is based on that it seems you don’t have the ability to follow the guidance to fix this since your comment sounds like you didn’t use any of our real development tool to flash the board before. So RMA was the easier method then.

But since it is not option, then we need to find a alternative.

If you ever used sdkmanger, then it will install the whole BSP package on your host with default path ~/nvidia/.

There is a flash.sh tool inside Linux_for_Tegra. You can refer to the quick start guide to understand how to use it.

I have also got the SDK Manager installed and ran the flash.sh using the following command:
sudo ./flash.sh jetson-xavier-nx-devkit mmcblk0p1
This process seemed to complete successfully although the system will still not boot further than the original post here .

Is the log you just shared coming from a board that was just re-flashed by sdkmanager?

Please try below configruation.

  1. On your host machine, go the ~/nvidia and there should be a “Linux_for_Tegra” inside it. Please go to Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf.

  2. Remove the “quiet” inside this file and this will enable more log in the serial consoel. Curretnly, the kernel log is in silent mode.

  3. In the same file, add “root=/dev/mmcblk0p1” after the APPEND field. Should be after that “{cbootargs}”.

  4. Flash the board with flash.sh again (sudo ./flash.sh jetson-xavier-nx-devkit mmcblk0p1).

  5. Boot up and dump the log again.

The i2c error is expected as my previous comment.

Looks like using flash method is not able to work. Previous flash result with both mmcblk1p1 and root=/dev/mmcblk1p1 already tried to mount the filesystem from your sdcard, but it still crashed with kernel panic.

I still have some tricks to try but need you to rebuild the kernel. Not sure if you are willing to do that.
