Laptop's RTX 4060 is basically unusable (Xid 62 and System is not in ready state)

  • The GPU doesn’t go above or below 12W and is stuck at the P3 performance level (in Windows it idles at 4W)
  • Only a single display resolution is available, the native one
  • Multiple crucial fields in nvidia-smi output read: System is not in ready state, monitoring is basically broken
  • Once the NVIDIA module is loaded I always get: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 62, pid='<unknown>', name=<unknown>, 20262044 2027f08e 2027df5c 2022ec3e 20281296 2022adbe 00000000 00000000
  • Without options nvidia-drm modeset=1 Xorg is able to run only once. All consequent attempts to start Xorg fail completely, it fails to initialize the screen.
  • After (software suspend) resume the system is completely dead.

Running:

OS: Fedora 40
Linux: 6.8.7
NVIDIA: 550.76
Model: Legion R9000P ARX8
The CPU iGPU is disabled in BIOS and is completely invisible to the system

Under Windows 10/11 this laptop is 100% functional. Nothing is overclocked.

This bit is most likely fixed by the just released 550.78.

From its changelog:

Fixed a regression that led to Xid errors when loading
the NVIDIA driver on some notebook systems with
RTX 4xxx series GPUs.

What a crazy timing but yep, the GPU is now semi-functional.

Issues that remain with just released 550.78:

  • Only a single display resolution is available, the native one.
  • At 60Hz display output is extremely jerky, at 240Hz it’s fine but idle power consumption is 1W higher (4.5W vs 5.5W). Under Windows the GPU idles at 3.9W.
  • After (software suspend) resume the Xorg server is kinda dead. You see a black background and the mouse pointer which you can move. The only workaround is to press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to restart Xorg. Switching to Linux console is not possible either. They are all dead.
  • Under Windows the monitor is GSync compatible, under Linux it’s GSync uncertified or something like that and it doesn’t use/enable VRR.

In short it’s all quite depressing. This laptop model was released over nine months ago. It’s basically unusable under Linux.
