Latest production driver (595.84) missing from repository

Latest production drivers (595.84) is missing from Index of /compute/cuda/repos/debian13/x86_64

data-center drivers have different priorities and their own release schedule. Most probably 595.84 contains only desktop fixes so there was no point to make a DC release.

Oh thanks for response. I did not know repo was intended mostly for DC. It’s really the only drivers that has worked for me through extrepo. The .run file package never worked (bunch of issues) and i rather just install directly from repo than using those.

Strange it isn’t default tho imo.

Personally I don’t recommend extrepo for anything, but I know it’s popular…

The NV apt repo is documented as DC-focused both on the Debian wiki and in their official guide ;-)

Currently, due to lack of interest from the Debian project in maintaining NV driver packages, these DC drivers are indeed the best choice in most cases, but the downside is exactly that desktop features/fixes are sometimes delayed…

Oh whats so wrong with extrepo since you wont recommend?

Funny enough after this latest drivers i started having problems, screen randomly goes black. Maybe they started using AI or something for the drivers. Kind of the reason why i noticed it missing was i was sort of waiting for a new driver. Haven’t really had much problems with Nvidia drivers before, both on Windows and Linux.

Yeah i wouldn’t expect most current drivers in Debian repository, or anything most current. Thats pretty much expected from debian basically.

theyve been using AI for their drivers for some time now lol

its not even a maybe

Exactly because it loses related context and disclaimers. Software in 3rd party repos is not included in the official ones usually for some reasons: these may vary from being intended only for certain use-cases, untimely security patches, etc etc. These should be given at least a brief consideration before blindly copying-pasting an entry into one’s sources.list: that’s like a self-inflicted RCE…

As a trade-off, it is expected to be really stable and patched for security vulnerabilities: none of which can be said about v550 currently in the official Debian repos. Now if you read all the small footnotes in the Debian docs, you will find that non-free component is not covered by the Security Team, so in theory no policy has been broken, but it’s really pushing it to the limits. Especially that the solution is to simply update the driver to v580 that is an LTS, supports both new (Blackwell) and old (Maxwell/Pascal) archs and receives regular updates from NV, so all the work is already done by them. That’s why 1123801 was filed, but it has received zero attention from the maintainers.

BTW: if you use the official -backports, you usually get the most recent almost anything.
