Hi,

I had a query on the distribution and licensing of IsaacSim and Omniverse.

As I understand it, the license restricts the distribution of Omniverse as part of an application or service.

I have a unique situation where I need to share the Omniverse/IsaacSim library with external colleagues so it can be run in an airgapped environment (where pypi is otherwise inaccessible) for internal R&D purposes (ML/AI research testing, paper reproducibility), not for producing real robotics apps/services. This exchange would be as simple as pip installing the library on a (Docker) container and sharing that container, as opposed to my colleagues installing it on their own.

> No. If you sell only your custom Python code and `.usd` assets to a client, and the client runs them on their own Isaac Sim environment, no redistribution fees or royalties to NVIDIA are required. An NVIDIA AI Enterprise license is **not** required in this case.

The above is found on the license FAQ and I believe my use case is similar to the above. In the strictest sense, I would simply be sharing a Docker container containing many libraries. Would this be permissible under a free license?

Hi @deckboy121, thanks for the detailed question and for doing your due diligence on the licensing terms before proceeding.

The scenario you describe — sharing a Docker container with Isaac Sim pre-installed for internal, non-commercial R&D purposes among colleagues — does technically involve redistributing NVIDIA’s software, which is distinct from the FAQ scenario you cited (where the _client_ installs and runs Isaac Sim themselves on their own environment). The key distinction in the FAQ is that the client obtains Isaac Sim independently; in your case, Isaac Sim is bundled inside the container you are distributing.

Under the standard NVIDIA Omniverse/Isaac Sim free license, redistribution of the software itself (even embedded in a container) is generally restricted. However, NVIDIA does provide official Isaac Sim Docker container images (e.g., via NGC: [Isaac Sim | NVIDIA NGC](https://catalog.ngc.nvidia.com/orgs/nvidia/containers/isaac-sim)) that your colleagues could pull directly — this would be the cleanest approach for an airgapped setup, as you could mirror or cache the NGC image internally without you personally redistributing NVIDIA’s binaries.

For an airgapped environment specifically, you may want to explore NGC private registry mirroring — pull the official Isaac Sim container image once and host it on an internal registry your colleagues can access.

For a definitive answer on whether your specific internal sharing arrangement is permitted under the free license, we strongly recommend reaching out directly to NVIDIA’s licensing team at [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/about-nvidia/contact-nvidia/](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/about-nvidia/contact-nvidia/) or consulting the full NVIDIA Omniverse License Agreement, as licensing questions of this nature require an authoritative legal/licensing response rather than community forum guidance.
