I would like to boot Linux mainline on the Xavier. Unfortunately, I get stuck here. Any pointers are welcome. Logs below.

Since you are already past the cboot process and now the system is booting the kernel that you have selected, the dtb is now being parsed by the kernel.

Any dtb doesn’t work if the corresponding driver code is not present. Device tree blob has information about the hardware and the corresponding drivers would know how to read them and initialize/work on the devices. So, in your case even if you are using the same dtb as provided through L4T, the mainline kernel doesn’t have the drivers which know how to read the information about the devices.

So, you won’t be able to boot mainline linux on Xavier. Better to take Xavier’s L4T kernel source and backport only those things (drivers, bugfixes, other subsystems, etc.) that are of your interest. BTW, why do you wish to move to the mainline linux instead of using the L4T kernel? Any specific reason for that?

Thanks for coming back to this. My understanding is that I’m not at all past the cboot process but rather get stuck there.

Obviously, I do not intend use a L4T DTB with mainline. Actually, unless some other blob is taken silently (I’m not aware of this from the messages), /boot/tegra194-p2972-0000.dtb picked up by cboot is from the same kernel build /boot/Image-upstream is. I think this should normally work.

Do you think I need to flash other any partitions? Maybe a custom cboot to boot a non-L4T kernel?

AFAIU, you are at the point where cboot has picked up the kernel Image that you asked it to pick up (option 2) and now it’s running the Authentication checks on it and the DTB after which it will load it. I think the DTB is coming from the kernel-dtb partition which was flashed by the SDKManager (or the ./flash.sh script) assuming that you haven’t mentioned the “FDT” entry in the extlinux.conf file. The issue is at:

where it couldn’t find /cpu/cpu@2 (CPU 2). This could be because the memory regions are not initialized correctly or may be something else is missing between L4T kernel and mainline kernel.

I am still of the opinion that your attempt to build mainline kernel won’t work because it doesn’t have the necessary driver to initialize hardware. I am still not sure why you wish to boot mainline kernel even if NVIDIA hasn’t moved to a newer one.

I think it will be great if someone from NVIDIA replies to this query as I am little familiar with cboot. I also think that @linuxdev may be able to answer this (as I find him one of the most Linux informed persons on this forum).

Thanks for all comments. As I had said the right (non-L4T) DTB was provided. That is via FDT entry but later on I also flashed it to no avail. I think it was a cboot issue but I couldn’t find the sources to verify it and investigate it further.
Anyhow, I was using Jetpack 4.3 before and as I recently reflashed my board with JetPack 4.4 DP and made the same changes this issue is gone.

Let me know if I understand correctly that you are now able to boot the Xavier with a mainline kernel (5.4.x) and some custom dtb without any issue. The device may have booted but are all devices up and running, right?

It’s a baseline. Don’t expect much but I think you can start from here if you’re interested.
I’m also figuring out what I can get running with the current code base as we speak.

We usually start with the same kernel source code and device-tree-blob that NVIDIA provides through their “public_sources” tarballs. This way we know that if something doesn’t work with our kernel but works with NVIDIA’s stock L4T kernel then the issues must be in our ported patches.

But, if a linux master tree boots the system up then that’s really very interesting, probably nit-picking certain, known driver code from the L4T public_sources may give a working tree or one can always hope so :-)
