Modelines are ignored and cannot force resolution on non-edid installation

I have a system with a Quadro P620 with 4 mini-dp. I want to have an X server with a resolution of 1280x1024 showing at the DP-4 output, and I want it to be active regardless of whether there are connected screens or not.

In order to do that, I’ve connected a screen (with a native resolution of 1280x1024) and I’ve used xvidtune to get the modeline. Then, I’ve written the following xorg.conf:

That looks rather complicated. Why don’t you just extract the edid from the monitor and then use a minimal xorg.conf like

Thanks for answering generix. I don’t want to have the binary edid like you suggested because I may have different monitors connected from different venders, so their EDID would not match, although all of them have the same native resolution.

That sounds like you want to have the cake and eat it. Just to clear up to behaviour you want to achieve:

  • If no monitor is connected, detect a monitor with 1280x1024 resolution.
  • If a monitor is connected, detect that monitor correctly and use its native resolution.
    I don’t think that’s possible.
    Two options I can think of:
  • use a hdmi dummy plug if no monitor is connected
  • use an xorg.conf like this:

This will give you a virtual resolution when no monitor is connected. Downside is, some WMs won’t use that since they need to see a monitor.
