No PCIe Link to I210 at low temperatures (-20°..-25°C)

Dear NVidia Team
We test our custom carrier boards in a temperature chamber doing cycles between -25°C and 60°C. Our test only makes power on and offs while checking the ethernet connection to the I210 on our system when power is on. We now have the problem that for some devices, the test fails at low negative temperatures (around -20°C) and when we check why, we see that there is no pcie link to the I210 chip. “lspci” does not list the device and in dmesg we see the message “link is down”. The UPHY_RX8/UPHY_TX8 signal are routed to the on board I210. A test with a I210 mPCIe Module showed the same error (using UPHY_RX0/TX0).
All other pcie devices connected seem to always get recognized for example I210 Chips attached over a PCIe Switch to the PCIe lanes NVHS0_TX0/RX0.
We once switched the Xavier Modules of a system showing the errors and one that did not, and the error went with the Xavier Module. The I210 Design on the carrier board is already in use for multiple different systems without any problem (also TX2 systems).
Do you know about any pcie connection problems at low temperature? On the DevKit, UPHY_RX8/TX8 are not used, how was this interface verified?

The UPHY8 lines are routed with other UPHY lines in parallel in module. Is there any other PCIe device can work well on UPHY8 port at around -20°C with your custom board? Do you have the log file when this happen? Also please list the part number of failed module.

We can not test any other device on UPHY8 port as these signals go directly to the I210 chip. But we will check on the UPHY0 Port, if other devices are recognized with a system showing the failure. Here the dmesg when it happens:

We have some additional questions about the PCIE Clock Design.

  • Is it correct that the clock signals are LVDS?
  • The TX2 on the opposite has HCSL pcie clocks?
  • Is there already any termination on the module for the different pcie clocks?
  • Could this difference between the TX2 and the Xavier AGX lead to our problem, as we do not have any termination on our custom carrier board for the clock?

Are you sure the the lspci does not show anything? According to your log, pcie has done the enumeration and the igb driver is initiated…?

We have multiple I210 in the system, but only one is not after a PCIe Switch. The PCI controller pcie@1416000 shows link down, but there should be another I210.

  1. Could you elaborate more about your system?

  2. It is possible to remove unnecessary device and keep only 1 i210 for your issue?

  3. Can you control the temperature and confirm if this issue is really relatedo to temperature?

  1. We use all pcie lanes on our custom carrier board. We have two mPCIe slots, one I210 connected directly to pcie@1416000, an M.2 Key M slot, and one pcie lane goes to a PCIe Switch from Perciom and behind that switch are more I210 controllers. The failure we see is when the I210 is connected directly to the Xavier Module. To verify the design on our board, we also tested with an mPCIe Modul from Innodisk, where an I210 controller is equipped:

  2. It is possible to remove unnecessary devices and keep only 1 i210 for our issue, but we would have to repeat some measurements. We will also try to do a test with the DevKit and a PCIe Card holding an I210 to see if the failure can be seen.

  3. It is related to temperature, we were able to see multiple devices failing at -20°C, whereas if we make the test at room temperature, they work just fine. We have a temperature chamber to control the environment.

Other I210 work fine, but only if they are behind a PCIe Switch. If we connect the I210 directly to lane 8 or lane 0 (mPCIe Module), some devices do not work.

  2. These i210, which are connected on pcie swithc, can even work in low temperature?

Sorry for the not precise terms. Yes as you say it means the I210 devices.

  1. The PCIe Switch is using the NVHS0_TX0/RX0 lanes.
  2. Yes, they always work at all temperatures.

Is there a way to change the clock termination for the Xavier Module? In its tuning guide, there’s nothing mentioned about termination of the PCIe clock.

The guide is all we can provide for PCIe test. We don’t support tuning on PCIe. We only provide information for compliance/testing. Customer is expected to meet the DG routing requirements.
