NVIDIA 580.178.04: nvidia-drm NVKMS GEM allocation failures on Plasma Wayland with GTX 1070

I am seeing repeatable Plasma Wayland freezes/stutters and a plasmashell crash on Fedora 44 with NVIDIA 580.178.04.

System:

  • Fedora 44 Workstation
  • Kernel: 7.1.13-200.fc44.x86_64
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, Pascal, 8 GB VRAM
  • NVIDIA driver: 580.178.04 from RPM Fusion 580xx packages
  • Desktop: KDE Plasma 6 Wayland
  • Display setup: 4 monitors
  • Secure Boot: disabled
  • Kernel args include: nvidia-drm.modeset=1 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau,nova_core modprobe.blacklist=nouveau,nova_core

Problem:
Under Plasma Wayland, the desktop freezes/stutters when switching virtual desktops. Under heavier compositing load, plasmashell can crash. The issue is easiest to trigger
while restoring a large Brave session with many windows/tabs, but I can still trigger freezes after Brave is forced to XWayland with GPU disabled.

Brave configurations tested:

  • Native Wayland Brave with Vulkan disabled: very high VRAM usage, NVIDIA DRM allocation failures, plasmashell crash.
  • XWayland Brave with --disable-gpu: lower VRAM use, but virtual desktop switching can still freeze/stutter and produce NVIDIA DRM allocation failures.

Relevant kernel log:
[drm:nv_drm_gem_alloc_nvkms_memory_ioctl [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000b00] Failed to allocate NVKMS memory for GEM object

Relevant Plasma/Qt crash log:
QWaylandGLContext::makeCurrent: eglError: 0x3003
QSGRenderLoop::handleContextCreationFailure
plasmashell terminated with SIGABRT

Observed behavior:

  • nvidia-smi continues to work from the real desktop session.
  • During native Wayland Brave restore, VRAM rose to around 7.1 GiB / 8 GiB.
  • After closing Brave, VRAM dropped back to around 1.0 GiB.
  • With Brave on XWayland and --disable-gpu, VRAM is lower, but virtual desktop switching can still produce NVKMS allocation failures.
  • The visible per-process VRAM in nvidia-smi does not fully account for total VRAM usage, suggesting hidden/pinned KMS/GBM allocations.

Expected behavior:
Plasma Wayland should not freeze or crash due to nvidia-drm NVKMS/GEM allocation failures during normal compositor activity such as switching virtual desktops.
