As it was stated at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/legacy-products/12/582139/nvidia-9400m-linux-nvidia-driver-340108/ that that forum is not linux forum.
So: I have in mind something that would be beneficial for both nvidia and legacy nvidia card users: If all legacy nvidia drivers would be provided for every new linux kernel, I - and I think - many other would pay for it.
It becomes nowadays a trend to give extended lts for money. Why throw away good hardware that is still beautifully functional?
Imagine a program installed either ppa or just a .run file (like older drivers) that after install needs a token to set up for legacy driver usage. This token would be machine specific obtained by your legacy driver user account from nvidia, and valid until suscription is valid. Yes, subscription for 2$/month/machine. Token used by more than one machine would be discarded, and warning the user that it got compromised, and give the option to generate a new one.
Please consider it. This would be the best solution imho.
