nvidia-persistenced can't start because of "existing" PID file which doesn't exist

I have the 346.46 NVIDIA drivers installed on an Ubuntu 14.04 system. When I try to start nvidia-persistenced, I observe the following in /var/log/syslog:

Jun 10 18:20:15 node03 nvidia-persistenced: Started (2501)
Jun 10 18:20:15 node03 nvidia-persistenced: Failed to open PID file: File exists
Jun 10 18:20:15 node03 nvidia-persistenced: Shutdown (2504)
Jun 10 18:20:15 node03 nvidia-persistenced: Shutdown (2501)

On another Ubuntu system on which nvidia-persistenced is running normally, it seems to be using the PID file /run/nvidia-persistenced/nvidia-persistenced.pid; however, the file is not present on the problematic system. Any idea as to how to get rid of the above problem?
