Returning back to linux after long hiatus. New install of Ubuntu 20.04 on MSI Ge76 Raider laptop.
Purged manual driver install after OS install and did Software & Updates Additional Drivers install, using nvidia-driver-515. At this point, I rebooted. Came back to terminal, issued nvidia-smi and got:
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
Thought that was weird, so issues dkms status nvidia and got:
nvidia, 515.65.01, 5.15.0-46-generic, x86_64: installed
Issued sudo prime-select intel, then did prime-select query to see intel. Did sudo prime-select nvidia and did query to see nvidia.
Issued uname -r and see: 5.15.0-46-generic
Issued dmesg |grep -i nvidia and receive:
821.855379] nvidia-nvlink: Nvlink Core is being initialized, major device number 506
[ 821.855385] NVRM: This PCI I/O region assigned to your NVIDIA device is invalid:
[ 821.856080] nvidia: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -1
[ 821.856094] NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
[ 821.856095] NVRM: None of the NVIDIA devices were initialized.
[ 821.856248] nvidia-nvlink: Unregistered Nvlink Core, major device number 506
I did OS updates and reboot, thinking maybe there was some sort of compat. issue or something. Still having issue and not really sure where to go. I did purge of nvidia and redid 515 drivers and still same issue. Any help appreciated.
