Nvidia-smi - "No devices were found" and timeout error - headless ubuntu with 1660

Please help!

Trying to get nvidia-smi to find my nvidia 1660 gpu (driver version 525.78.01) on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS headless server. I am using the card for plex transcodes.

Is there a way to tell nvidia-smi where to look?

Secure boot is turned on in the bios (I was warned that turning it off at this point can result in a major PIA)

Let me know what other info might help.

Stuff I have done
I have tried every solution I could find online that looked like it had a remote chance of helping out:
-installed legacy drivers

  • Re-installed latest drivers, from ubuntu repository and nvidia drivers from the site

  • Editing X-windows related configuration files per articles found just in case
    - Adding these parameters to grub one by one per the readme file:


Created a .conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
And just in case another .conf file with:
options nvidia “NVreg_RestrictProfilingToAdminUsers=0”
