Why do you delete root=/dev/mmmcblk0p1? That will cause kernel not able to mount the file system…
Only limited commands are feasible in bash shell.
You can check this post to get a command to add this back.

I implemented sudo apt get update & sudo apt get upgrade through serial port
Do you have other modules to flash?
If yes, try it on them and see if you can see same issue.
