I’ve been an active user of both linux (usually ubuntu) and nvidia/cuda for a number of years now, and I cannot seem to resolve issues with apt. Every few months after updating I have to purge and reinstall nvidia’s drivers due to dependency issues. It takes quite a lot of time and I’m looking now to resolve it directly.
I have spent much time going through forums, both here and on stack overflow. I have tried installing the binaries (which are better but can also be a massive headache), the standard installations, and a number of tricks - both of my own making and those I’ve found online. I’m able to fix it in the short term, but next update: same problem.
My question is the following: is this a Linux issue, or an Nvidia one? It seems this problem is pervasive, consistent, and probably shouldn’t be happening. It seems that something went wrong over the last few years - I wasn’t doing this all the time before COVID. It is also consistent across all my computers (5) so I find myself doing way too much work trying to fix issues like this whenever a new update rolls out.
It is highly frustrating, and I have started delaying updates because I know I’ll have to spend several hours digging up the right fixes. It feels like an unsustainable time sink.
