Polar bear early warning detector

Hi all,

This is a project from myself (Kim Hendrikse) and Artic researcher Lars Holst Hansen.

The system uses yolov6 detection to detect bears and alert researchers to get out of harms way.

It’s currently deployed in Copenhagen zoo where we are testing its effectiveness as well as gathering more bear images to improve the model. Below is a link to a LinkedIn post about it, including a video made by Copenhagen zoo.

Soon it will go to another zoo in Denmark and will be deployed to a research station in 2025 in Greenland to trigger sirens and lights if a bear is detected as well as send video alerts to give a heads up to the environmental researchers there.

The system can scan multiple camera feeds and uses a flexible system of zone polygons, exclusion zones and other logic to make it very reliable and resilient.

It’s running on a Seeed Studio recomputer 4012. Orin NX 16GB
