Hello everyone,

I’ve been exploring the boot sequence of NVIDIA Jetson boards and noticed that while U-Boot appears to support PXE, booting via PXE isn’t enabled or accessible on these devices. I’m keen to understand the specifics behind why PXE booting isn’t supported on the Jetson series despite U-Boot’s compatibility.

Could someone from the community or NVIDIA shed light on the technical limitations or reasons behind the absence of PXE boot functionality on the Jetson boards? Additionally, are there any plans or considerations for enabling PXE boot in future firmware updates?

Additionally, I’m interested in exploring remote flashing alternatives for blank Jetson boards. Since PXE boot isn’t an option, are there any other methods or protocols that could be utilized to remotely flash a blank Jetson board solely by connecting it to power? I’d appreciate insights or guidance on alternative remote flashing solutions for the Jetson series.

Moreover, within the scope of mass production, does NVIDIA recommend any specific methods for flashing Jetson boards in bulk, excluding tools like the Massflash tool that require RCM mode and a micro-USB connection?

I greatly appreciate any insights or information regarding these aspects of Jetson board production and remote flashing options.

Thank you for your valuable input and expertise.

Sorry for the late response.
Is this still an issue to support? Any result can be shared?

1. I am not sure which platform you are asking here because we are not using Uboot on Xavier NX.

2. PXE boot is supported after rel-35.4.1.

3. Only usb flash has the ability to do massflash now.

Thank you for these answers.

Could you clarify one point for me: Can I use PXE boot to flash a device? And can I do this for multiple devices simultaneously?

If massflash is currently only available via usb, will it be possible to perform it over the network someday? Is this within Nvidia’s plans?

To clarify the reason behind my questions, I can explain my issue, which seems quite simple. I’ve always flashed the Jetson using the SDK Manager. Today, I need to work more professionally in an industrial context. This means that I need to produce a large number of cards in a short period. Therefore, I’m seeking a solution that ideally relies on two main pillars:

- Flashing multiple devices simultaneously in an efficient and rapid manner.
- Flashing the cards remotely over the network.

Presently, I am able to flash Jetpack 4 (using Massflash) and Jetpack 5 (using l4t\_initrd\_flash.sh - workflow 7). However, there’s still a dependency on being connected via USB to the cards.

Consequently, I am trying to comprehend and implement the Nvidia tools designed for operational production in such use cases.

Jetsons do not have a BIOS. They have the equivalent in software. This means:

- It costs less.
- It uses less power.
- It is smaller.
- It cannot be “bricked” from a bad flash.
- It cannot self-flash.

In recovery mode the Jetson becomes a custom USB device understood only by the custom USB driver. That driver uses a desktop Linux PC architecture. So you are constrained to use USB to flash if recovery mode is used.

Normal operating mode does not provide access to some of the internal storage, so I think that other than for the rootfs, you’d be constrained to flashing in recovery mode. The non-rootfs content is tied to the rootfs software, and so it would be difficult on an eMMC model to flash just the rootfs and make it work. At the least, such a method would have a lot of failures from mismatched boot and BIOS software. Even if you used something like PXE boot to flash just the rootfs, then this would be far less successful in a commercial setting than USB is.
