Reading custom data via DiplayPort AUX Channel / Display Data Channel

We want to transmit custom data via DisplayPort AUX Channel / Display Data Channel from the output device to the pc (e.g. exposure curves etc) and read it out in our application.

Unfortunately the information on this topic on the internet is rather sparse. Is this even possible and if so, is there any sample program or library that helps us getting started with this? All of this should work on openSUSE Leap 42.3.
