Recovered GPU Errors in nvidia-settings

I have 2x GTX780 Ti driving 3 monitors @ 2560x1440. (Currently running nvidia-340, but also happened previously using nvidia-337)

I’m currently running in Base Mosaic mode; however, this seems to also occur in SLI-Mosaic mode.

I’ve recently been experiencing (possibly after an upgrade?) hard freezes. And I’ve noticed that prior to freezing the number of “Recovered GPU Errors” are generally around a dozen or so.

Temperature is hovering around high 40s to low 50s. I’m not driving the cards very hard when lock ups happen, just accelerated desktop and web browsing.

Would this be a hardware issue or a software one? How can I narrow this down?

Uploaded the bug report log. The interesting part seems to be this area:

I don’t have recovered errors, but it looks pretty much the same. In my syslog I have:

Sep 27 09:33:04 desktop kernel: [ 1743.374142] NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:06:00): 38, 0001 00001000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000

And the last line, with Xid 38, is flooding the log after that.
It seems to be related to a dual monitor configuration, as it started when I bought a second monitor, and I don’t have the problem when one monitor is disabled. If it can help, the two monitors have different resolutions: one is a 30", 2560x1600, the other one a 24", 1920x1200. I had the problem with a couple of applications, but with firefox it’s basically guaranteed to happen. With Windows it seems to be fine.

I have a GTX690 on Debian testing, driver 343.22.

Now, if only I could find a way to attach my bug report… Is it possible that I can’t?

EDIT: found. How is it possible that I missed it? Oh well, bug report attached

It looks like there are some IOMMU-related messages in your system log. Can you please try passing intel_iommu=off to the kernel at boot to see if it helps?

That is very interesting. I added intel_iommu=off, and those Xid lines are gone. No more spamming in my logs. However, the problem is still there.
I don’t understand it. There are apparently no driver errors logged, which would make me keen to exclude the driver. But then, why do I have the problem only when I have 2 monitors configured in the nvidia-settings?
Could it be a hardware problem? I’ll try to use Windows more to see what happens.

By the way, what does that iommu line do exactly? For what I understand it has consequences on the virtualization, but my virtual box has no problems

I am using AMD proc/mobo and I also get these errors as well with 2 GTX580’s and 3x 1080p monitors setup in base mosaic. Was never a problem with a single monitor. It wasn’t an issue when I added a second monitor. It wasn’t until I added the 3rd and had to setup base mosaic that I started to have issues. In order to get X to start I had to add iommu=pt to my kernel boot options, otherwise the first monitor would show up black and the other 2 would go into “sleep” mode.

For me it only seems to happen when browsing the web with firefox (have not tried other browsers). What will happen is I will be scrolling a page, it will freeze for a split second, the part of the page that is displayed will get all garbled, those errors will be thrown in DMESG and Journal (I have a conky that always shows the last 10 lines of each) and I will have to scroll past the garbled part and then back to get it to redraw the garbled part. Ive had no issues with gaming or anything else to my knowledge though ill pay more attention to it and report back here. It’s just been one more minor annoyance I have learned to kinda deal with, though it would be fantastic if it could be figured out.

So it could be 2 monitors connected to the same card?

On Windows things look quite good. It really looks like it’s specific to a multimonitor configuration in Linux. If it’s not the driver I don’t know what it is. Can it be a problem with the kernel? I have 3.14.15-2, on Debian testing 64 bit
For the record: Firefox is by far the most frequent, but I had the problem with Eclipse and Gedit too. No problems with Chrome, which I used before finding out everything works with one monitor.

I didn’t have the issues when I was running 2 monitors I don’t think, at least if it did happen it happened FARRRR less and didn’t produce the graphical errors like it does now with 3. When I got the 3rd monitor since my 2 monitors were already on the top card I put the 3rd on the bottom card. The first time it booted just as it had before with only 2 monitors working. Then I enabled base mosaic and setup the 3rd in nvidia-settings, saved to xorg.conf and restarted X.org(XFCE). It failed as I said above, and after trying a bunch of things I ended up googling the error shown the the log and after some more digging I came across a post not even talking about monitors or gpus with the iommu=pt command, I tried it and it now works.

I play all of my games spanned across all 3 monitors @ 5760x1080 in linux, just like nvidia surround in windows. This includes native games and also win games with wine. Performance is great, I was just testing Dead Space 3 in wine last night. 5760x1080, all settings maxed running between 70 and 100 fps without vsync enabled. So performance is great. It’s just this one “little” bug, as it’s never caused a full crash, only corruption in firefox as far as I can tell. I’m on alert for it happening with anything else and will report if I see it.

I’ve finally not been too busy to break away and post when this happens. This is from firefox, still have not seen it from anything else.

Looks like it’s more mosaic than the multiple monitors. I got the problem with one monitor and mosaic enabled.
Can’t get xinerama to work though

Yea, Mosaic being the issue is what it seems. I’ve never tried it with one monitor and I used twinview with 2. Xinerama is mostly just fail. It doesn’t work very well and breaks things like double buffering so for instance. Conky on my desktop would flicker everytime it updated… I honestly don’t know why it’s still an option in the driver.

@aplattner, any ideas here? need anymore logs/info? would love to see this fixed, even if it’s just a minor annoyance for me and it’s never completely crashed on me, it has for others.
