ROOTFS_AB Will not switch slot after startup failures 3 times

My operation error caused partition A to fail to start normally, and a Kernel panic would be reported every time it was started.

After three consecutive failures, Switching the bootchain is printed, but it still boots from partition A.

By the way, besides using the nvbootctl command, is there any other way to switch slots?

Now even if I re-flashed the A partition, it still reboots endlessly and cannot enter rootfs.

Are you trying to verify the fail-safe mechanisom to check if it could switch to another slot if the current slot is unbootable?
Or you are trying to fix the boot failed issue?

By dd command. I copied from SlotB volume to SlotA. And then correction the partition_uuid in extlinux.conf

By the way, what is the difference between bootloader/system.img and tools/kernel_flash/images/external/system.img? Which one was used for final flash? Is system.img consistent with the rootfs partition that is ultimately mounted when running on the device?

If I want to make a differential patch through the rdiff tool, can I use system.img to make a signature file and then compare it with /dev/nvme0n1p1 on the device?

In addition to nvbootctrl, is there any other way to set the boot slot?

It is the original system image created from <Linux_for_Tegra>/rootfs.

It is the system image generated during inird flash and it would be used for external device.

system image and the signature are both generated and performed during flash, you can refer to the script for it.

Currently, you can only use nvbootctrl to switch boot slot.

Please share the full serial console log for further check.

I can’t reproduce the initial situation now, but I randomly modified the A partition, making it unbootable. I hope the redundant system can function in this case. But after printing the last line, it got stuck. Now, I can’t enter the system no matter what I do.

It seems watchdog has been initialized correctly on your board.
So, it will trigger reset after stuck for more than 120 seconds.

Please also share the result of the following command on your board.

$ sudo nvbootctrl -t rootfs dump-slots-info

However, the system did not reboot after 120 seconds.

It seems something causes watchdog failed due to this approach.

Could you try to destroy rootfs slot A through removing /lib as this topic?

I tested it, and in this situation, the watchdog is effective. After three failures, it successfully switched to another slot. However, we hope to be able to switch in any failure scenario, including when the watchdog fails. Is there a way to achieve this? For example, a hardware watchdog

May I know the use case to configure it from UEFI variable instead of using nvbootctrl command?

I’m afraid that if the situation described above occurs and it becomes permanently unbootable, we can mount the SSD using an external device and modify the variable values to enable it to boot from another slot.

Currently, once this situation arises, I can only restore it by re-flashing the image, which is too troublesome.

Currently, you can select the external NVMe SSD as boot device from UEFI menu for this use case.

It seems the issue is caused from mounting failure of filesystem so that the watchdog is not working.
We’ve fixed this issue in the latest JP5.1.3(R35.5.0) and also JP6.0GA(R36.3.0).
You can move to one of these 2 releases to verify.

I tested on r36.3, and the watchdog can be triggered normally. Thank you.
