RTX 2070 SUPER FE — Fan control not responding on Linux and Windows (drivers 550–580)

Hello,

I would like to report a fan control issue with my NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition when using recent driver versions on both Linux and Windows 10/11.

The issue is not related to the operating system but appears to be a driver-level regression, likely affecting fan-control logic or GSP firmware initialization.

Description of the problem:

  • The GPU fans spin, but only at a very low and constant speed.

  • They do not ramp up according to GPU temperature, causing the card to overheat even under moderate load.

  • Manual fan control through nvidia-settings (Linux) or the NVIDIA Control Panel (Windows) does not work — fan-speed attributes are missing or unresponsive.

  • GPU temperature is reported correctly, but the fan controller no longer reacts to it.

This behavior did not occur in older driver branches such as the 535.xx series, where fan control worked normally and followed temperature changes.

The problem affects Founders Edition models of the RTX 2070 SUPER, which use an internal microcontroller (MCU) to manage fan speed.
It seems that the newer drivers fail to properly initialize or communicate with this MCU, possibly due to changes introduced in the GSP firmware.

Please investigate this regression, as it prevents proper thermal management and can lead to overheating during normal use.

System details:

  • OS: Arch Linux (kernel 6.12.51-1-lts)

  • Also reproduced on: Windows 10 Pro and Windows 11 Pro (latest driver 581.42 WHQL)

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition

  • Driver versions tested: 580.95.05 (Linux) / 581.42 (Windows)

Thank you for your attention.
Best regards,
Andrés
