RTX 5080 NVDEC crashes entire system on MP4 playback — nvlddmkm Event ID 153 — Studio Driver 591.74 and 595.79

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with my RTX 5080 where playing any MP4 file causes a complete system freeze requiring a hard reboot. MOV files work perfectly fine. I’ve spent an entire day troubleshooting and I’m out of ideas.

System specs:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 16GB

  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9

  • RAM: 128GB DDR5

  • OS: Windows 11 Pro

  • Driver: 591.74 Studio Driver (clean install via DDU)

Symptoms:

  • Any MP4 file → complete system freeze, hard reboot required

  • MOV files → work perfectly

  • Audio plays for a few seconds before the freeze the entire system

  • After disabling Intel integrated graphics and rebooting: audio plays but video never appears (black screen), then freeze

What I’ve already tried:

  • Standard driver reinstall

  • DDU clean wipe in Safe Mode + fresh install

  • Rolled back from 595.79 to 591.74 Studio Driver

  • Disabled hardware decoding (in VLC → MP4 plays perfectly with CPU decoding

Event Viewer logs on every crash:

Source: nvlddmkm
Event ID: 153
Device: \Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 200

Current behavior after reinstalling drivers (591.74): Audio plays normally but video output is completely black. System isn’t freeze now. nvlddmkm Event ID 153 still appears in Event Viewer immediately after open the video.

Hi! I’m currently experiencing a very similar issue with my RTX 5080, including the nvlddmkm Event ID 153.

I was wondering if you ever managed to solve the problem. If so, could you please share what fixed it for you?

I’ve already done a clean Windows installation and reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers, but the issue came back while gaming.

Any update would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I couldn’t resolve it. What I did instead was use VLC Media Player and configure it to decode the video using the CPU. I also added a second GPU to my setup (an RTX 2070 Super). It seems to be working now, but the RTX 5080 still has the same issue.
