Hardware: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090
Driver: 595.91.07
OS: Ubuntu
Kernel: 7.0.0-34-generic
Desktop: GNOME
Session: Wayland
Display: 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz
Display port: HDMI
I am experiencing repeated display signal loss/restoration during system boot/login. The monitor repeatedly switches between displaying an image and losing the signal. It looks like the display is repeatedly entering/leaving a safe/no-signal state.
The physical monitor is connected directly to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, not to the AMD iGPU.
The issue occurs during boot/display initialization and is not related to an intentional suspend/hibernate operation.
The NVIDIA GPU itself is operational after boot:
nvidia-smi detects the RTX 5090 normally.
GPU temperature and power state are normal.
GNOME/Wayland is running on NVIDIA DRM.
Relevant NVIDIA DRM settings:
nvidia_drm modeset = Y
nvidia_drm fbdev = Y
/proc/fb = nvidia-drmdrmfb
The system also contains an AMD iGPU, but the monitor is physically connected to the RTX 5090.
During boot the kernel first initializes simpledrm, followed by NVIDIA DRM taking over the framebuffer:
simpledrm
…
nvidia-drm
…
vgaarb: deactivate vga console
fbcon: nvidia-drmdrmfb (fb0) is primary device
GNOME subsequently detects /dev/dri/card1 as the NVIDIA DRM device and uses atomic mode setting.
I have not found an NVIDIA Xid, EDID error, flip timeout, or GPU-fallen-off-bus error corresponding to the display problem in the journal.
The problem is reproducible during boot (after soft and cold boot, also). Interestingly, shortly pressing the computer’s power button sometimes helps and causes the display signal to become stable.
