Screen/system is dead on resume (unable to resume with all current drivers)

There are multiple possible causes for an Xid 56, and unfortunately, that error message by itself isn’t enough to isolate the specific problem you are encountering.

Do you have any ideas how I can debug this issue?

I can put my GPU into another computer and check suspend/resume - will it be helpful?

I can try to find another GTX 660 to temporarily put into my PC.

There are two PCI-E x16 slots on my motherboard - should I try moving my GPU to the other (secondary) one?

I’m all ears.

BTW, this computer successfully resumes from sleep when using nouveau.

Aaron/Zander/Sandipt, any ideas?

Chiming in as I have the same issue. Started after upgrading to latest Ubuntu (13.04 → 13.10). So obviously kernel, xorg, nvidia blob or something that changed during the update is to blame.
Asus MB & GTX 660 card.

You probably have a different problem since software suspend has never worked for me.

BTW, SysRq + K allows me to restart the X server, and the PC keeps on chugging on. It’s not really handy though as all X applications die in a process.

I’m having the same issue in Fedora 20 x86_64, with failure to resume from suspend.

Kernel 3.12.5/3.11.10 (happens with both)
NVIDIA 331.20 drivers from RPMFusion

MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning (factory OCed, but not any further)
ASUS P8P67 PRO
Core i5 2500K

But I do not have any problems with freezing/driver crashes in Windows 8.1.

This is what I have in my system logs:

Hi ;
is it a problem with resume from suspend ?
If it is that ; it is possible to reinstall the patched version of hal and reinstall the nvidia driver again . for me it solved the issue on Kernel 3.11 because of some conflict beetween systemd and hal . now it works perfectly .
if you need the new patched hal : see ppa of Michael Blennerhassett .

I don’t even have hal installed in my system.

In my case it’s a hardware/driver error, which NVIDIA doesn’t want to debug or help with.

Hi danielkza,

I’m facing the same problem as you on Fedora 20 x86_64. I did not have souch problem with F19 and older releases.

I have it on Lenovo T520 with Quadro NVS 4200M and Core i7-2670QM.

Few resumes are OK and than only reboot is possible from virtual console.

It seems that there is a such problem with 331.20 driver.

Hi,
i had the same problem with resume , the keyboard was dead , the mouse too . but after looking on nvidia installer log i have seen there were error with systemd . with a patched hal version , no error , no evo pusch problem . i installed powerbase management and powerwaked and the life is good .

This issue hasn’t been fixed.

I don’t use systemd, I’m on CentOS 6.5 running vanilla kernel (i686 with PAE).

:-(

And it’s still not fixed.

Under the current drivers (352.21) and kernel (4.1 i686 PAE) I cannot resume at all.

The system is simply dead on resume (even if I resume right after suspending).

There are no messages logged anywhere.

Just to add that I’m having the same issue:
