SDHCI register being accessed without clock

I have an M.2 module with an SDIO WiFi interface (laird ST60-2230C), which I see successfully initialize as ‘ultra high speed SDR104 SDIO card’ on the NVIDIA Jetson Nano devkit carrier (using below patch), and for which I can successfully install kernel driver modules and initialize firmware. When I attempt to connect to access point or start an access point however there is a continual stream of warning messages from the SDHCI driver. Is there something I might be missing in the device tree configuration regarding clock configuration? Anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong with this module’s SDIO driver?

SDIO enumeration during boot:
$ dmesg | grep mmc1

Is this the full dmesg or you have cut off some logs? We need the check the full trace.

Here’s a full copy of dmesg through the boot sequence, insmod of modules, and start of wpa_supplicant:

repeating till kernel hangs

Could you look into the sdhci driver (kernel/kernel-4.9/drivers/mmc/host/sdhci-tegra.c)
and see why “is_host_clk_enabled” is not set?

Hi phahn,

Were you able to figure out what was causing the “Reg 0x30 being accessed without clock” error. I am experiencing the same thing.

Thanks
Mike

Sorry never figured it out, I found the PCIE version of this Laird m.2 module is working on the Nano with a custom carrier board (needs a device tree patch see https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1068523/jetson-nano/pcie-wifi-module-driver-crashes-on-nano-but-not-on-tx1-/post/5416108/#5416108 if interested)

some challenges here include filtering kernel log after enabling debug output, since the kernel is constantly accessing emmc/SD card. i want just debug output for SDIO but then that requires figuring out which mmc controller the print comes from, for every debug statement that causes kernel log to balloon on filesystem accesses.

it’d also be handy to find a working SDIO m.2 WiFi module to have as reference, other options I’ve tested experience some form of driver crash or other error before attempting using it. other SDIO modules I’ve tested include:

  • Telit WE866C3-P
  • Embedded Artists 1MW

well i guess since the firmware download works, the SDIO connection is basically working, but then the functionality part of the WiFi driver is missing something to enable the clk? but why would that be part of the WiFi driver’s responsibility, if the SDIO connection is already working? maybe since these drivers are basically targeted to NXP i.mx6 platforms perhaps? these are questions that I’m not able to invest time investigating unfortunately.

Thanks phahn, appreciate the response and details on the PCIe variant and fix.

I managed to track the issue down, the dynamic clock gating feature in the sdhci is enabled by default which is a power saving feature. This was causing the clock to turn on / off as it was used. In some cases access was done without the clock being turned on. I just simply disabled power management on the specific SDHCI device and it resolved the issue.

adding nvidia,disable-rtpm; to the DTS was the key.

DTS update
